MAN — The May meeting of START (Seniors Taking Active Roles Today) was held Thurs., May 22, at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church. Attendees were greeted with pastel colored tablecloths with an eclectic collection of birdhouses.
A welcome and blessing of the food was followed by a “pot luck” lunch provided by members. As is the custom of START, those attending who celebrated a birthday in the month of May and guests were the leaders to the buffet table.
A delightful group of visitors were welcomed to the meeting having been invited by Gertie Moore and Elizabeth Tackett. Kerry Chad Albright, whose story as “The Miracle Baby” from the Buffalo Creek Flood was published in Reader’s Digest, was in attendance with two members of a video crew that are filming a documentary on the Buffalo Creek Flood.
Following the luncheon, Albright gave a very informative and entertaining talk about himself and things he has done in his life that were influenced by his growing up as a “Buffalo Creeker”. He sang an A Cappella song that were verses he had written to a favorite hymn. Several of our members had memories to share with Kerry and the video team.
His Honor, the mayor, Jim Blevins, gave the group a report on the memorial being built at the intersection of Rt 10 and Hanging Rock Road. He explained that there are decorative blocks that people may buy by contacting City Hall.
Following luncheon, the minutes of the May meeting were read by Secretary Barbara Brunty and a treasurer’s report by JoAnne Hensley for Treasurer Alice Harrison, were given. Those celebrating birthdays in May recognized included Deloris Spears and Norma Jean Nelson.
START will have their next regularly scheduled meeting Thurs., June 26, at 12 noon at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church. All are invited to come and enjoy great food and fellowship.
