McCONNELL — The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) of Logan High School met for the Annual Spring Rally on Sun., April 27, at First Baptist Church of McConnell.

Spring sports athletes from the girls’ softball programs, bowling leagues, Coalfield Soccer Teams, Lady Wildcats, weight-lighting team, area Cal Ripken Baseball, Logan Middle School Timberwolves Baseball and Softball, Logan High Wildcat Baseball, and Logan High School Tennis Team were represented at the event.

Each team was introduced, and several of the athletes took part in the morning worship service by ushering, praying, and singing.

LHS coaches that were in attendance were Assistant Softball Coach Jason Davis, Assistant LHS Tennis Coach Cherith Altizer, and Head Baseball Coach Roger Gertz and Assistant Baseball Coach Kevin Gertz and Ryan Waugh. The guest speaker was Head Football Coach of the Logan Wildcats, Gary Mullins.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a national organization that has a goal of including spiritual life in an athlete’s performance. The motto of FCA is “The Heart and Soul of Sports.” Logan High has had a FCA chapter for 13 years. The organization has been active in middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, and in pro sports for more than 50 years.

The faculty “huddle coach” at Logan High School is John E. Godby.

“The organization meets every Friday in my room during the lunch time,” Godby said.

Although Godby is not coaching a sport at LHS, he is a huge Wildcat supporter and fan.

“All the coaches at LHS willingly participate in the FCA activities and welcome the club’s positive influence on the LHS athletes,” Godby said. “I believe that a person is made up of three parts; physical, mental, and spiritual. That is why I encourage LHS athletes to be involved in the FCA program.”

Logan High School is associated with the FCA of West Virginia under the leadership of State Director Mr. Keith Tyler of Charleston.
