September 17


The Mingo County Democrat Women will meet at 6pm at the Thoroughbred Steak House. The guest speaker will be Senator Art Kirkendoll. We are looking forward to hearing about the things being accomplished in our capitol. All members and anyone interested in listening to the senator are encouraged to attend.


The next meeting of the Pike County Retired Teachers Association will be held on September 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mark 2 at the Landmark Inn in Pikeville. Also, the Big Sandy Retired Teachers will hold its 2013 Fall Workshop September 19 at Jenny Wiley State Park. The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. with registration at 8:30.


September 19


Stone Heritage will hold its regular monthly social meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the historic red robin building. Everyone is welcome to attend.


The Tug Valley Shrine Club will meet on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Williamson Masonic Lodge. They will be discussing a motorcycle poker run scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 22, the Christmas Party for Shrine kids. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting.


September 21


The annual Frank O’Brien 5-K run will be held on Saturday morning, September 21, starting at National Guard Armory in West Williamson. This is a part of the King Coal festival. For more info or to pre-register go to Facebook or the Tug Valley Road Runners Club website.


The Annual Bevins Reunion will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the Bent Branch Community Park, beginning at 10 a.m., with a potluck meal at 12 noon. The Park is located just off U.S. 119 at Meta, Kentucky. Bring your favorite dish, along with family stories and photos to share. All genealogists are welcome.


September 22


The Tug Valley Shrine Club will host a motorcycle poker run on Sunday. Registration will be at 12 noon till 2 p.m. Their will be door prizes given to the first 10 registered, the oldest rider, the youngest rider and other prizes. Proceeds will go toward transportation of children to Shriners Hospitals.


September 23


The Pike County Diabetes Partnership is hosting a free diabetes cooking school on September 23, 30 and October 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pike County Health Department. Learn to prepare healthy delicous meals and diabetes techniques. Anyone interested mus pre-register with Paula Compton at 606-509-5503.

Williamson City Council will hold its first monthly meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the council chambers of City Hall. The public is invited to attend.


An AARP Safe Driver’s Course is scheduled for Thursday, September 26 at the Pike County Extension Office, 148 Trivette Drive, Pikeville from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Please call 432-2534 to register. Spaces are limited.

A free grant writing workshop will be offered from 1:00 – 4:30 pm on Tuesday, October 1 at the Williamson Campus of the Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College in Williamson as part of the Third District Accelerator project.

The Burch High School Alumni Association has set its next reunion date. According to spokesperson Mary Lake Farley, the Burch High School Reunion is scheduled for October 4-6, 2013 at the Marriott, Columbus Airport Hotel, 1375 North Cassady Ave., Columbus, Ohio. The Belfry High Class of 1967 is having a picnic on October 5, at the Grants Branch Park at Stone, Ky. They have reserved the cabin at the top of the hill and the upper shelter so we are covered rain or shine. They ask attendees to bring a covered dish to share and soft drinks for their families/guests. They will start at 11 a.m.. The Mingo County Wellness Committee will conduct quarterly meetings at the Board Office in Williamson. If you would like to join the county wellness committee, please contact the Child Nutrition Office at 304-235-7142. The purpose of the committee is to address the wellness needs of students and the school environment by working collaboratively with community agencies toward addressing identified needs. Each school also has a wellness committee. If you would like to participate in the school wellness committee, please contact your school.


Alcoholics Anonymous - The St. Paul Espicopal Church has AA meetings Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 5th Ave. and Prichard St. in Williamson.


The GED is changing from the current paper-and-pencil test to a Computer-Based test beginning January s, 2014. The paper test will be offered for the last time on the December 2013 test date. If you have taken the GED, but not passed all of the tests, all scores will be cancelled after December 31, 2013. Thus, if you have one or more tests you still need to re-take, you must get it done not later than the December testing. After that, you must meet all the requirements for the new Computer-Based Test. If you have questions, call John Webb 304-235-3347, ext. 13 or Mary Oliver at 304-235-2022.


The Pike County Airport Board will hold two regular meetings each month at the following times and locations - First Thursday, Pike County Airport at 5 p.m. - Third Thursday at the East Ky. Expo Center at 12 noon.

The Parsley Bottom Freewill Baptist Food Pantry will continue to provide USDA commodities. The pantry gives out the food once monthly on the fourth Thursday.


Operation Charity food pantry will distribute free USDA food from 12 noon to 2 p.m. the last Friday of each month at the New Vision Assembly Church in Hatfield Bottom.
