Purchasing clothes and shoes for children returning to school in August is an added expense for all families, especially those who have a limited income.

As in years past, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources is doing its part to ease the financial burden for those in need who qualify.

West Virginia residents can apply for school clothing vouchers for eligible children now. The Department of Health and Human Resources says the vouchers can only be used toward the purchase of school clothing, with the exception of those families who sew clothing for their children, who will also be allowed use the vouchers to buy piece goods.

Each eligible child will receive a $200 voucher. Children in foster care will automatically receive the vouchers, along with children in families who currently receive cash assistance from the WV WORKS program. Other families could be eligible if they meet income guidelines.

July 31 is the deadline to submit applications and families must spend the vouchers at participating stores no later than Oct. 31 of this year. Families are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to apply.

For more information on the vouchers and to get a list of information you must have when making the application, call the Logan office of the DHHR at 304-792-7095, or visit their office in the State of West Virginia office building in downtown Logan.
