MAN — START (Seniors Taking Active Roles Today) members attending the Thursday, July 25, meeting spent a fantasy day at the “McDonald Beach.” The weather was beautiful outside and the new lights in the fellowship hall of Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church cast bright rays of light inside. To represent ocean waves coming into the beach, decorators arranged the tables in a wide “V” angle and each of the four rows of tables had different colored table coverings — one row blue, next row aqua, etc.

Each table was decorated with a light house, sail boat, various colored sand buckets, and beautiful sea shells. The napkins and placemats blended with the table coverings.

The food buffet tables were arranged in a square and in the center was a small wading pool, with a beach ball inside and shaded by a beach umbrella.

“As usual, the decorating committee did a wonderful job of turning the Fellowship Hall into McDonald Beach,” Frank Thompson, president of START, said. “However, they forgot to tell the members to wear garments/swim suits appropriate for the beach.”

Thompson opened the meeting and invited Bill McNeely to offer the opening prayer.

An abundance of delicious food was available, including good, tasty fish from Florida provided by Dr. Rallos.

Although several members were celebrating their July birthdays, only Thompson was present. Other birthday celebrants were Nancy Garrett, Sue Grimmette, Billie Noel, Robert Perry and Betty Jane Pozega.

START’s resident musical duo, Bob and Dixie Frazier, sang a selection of songs.

“START is so fortunate to have them,” Thompson said.

During the business session, Alice Harrison presented the treasurer’s report.

She announced that she had received money from the sale of START’s book, A Step Back in Time, Triadelphia District. It is evident that people are still purchasing copies of the book. The members voted to have their annual picnic in September and to have the food catered.

Afterwards, there was a drawing for door prizes. The door prizes were related to the beach theme in that after a full day at the beach, you would have an outdoor picnic. Therefore, the door prizes consisted of tomatoes and corn in a large decorative bag from Cracker Barrel. The produce was purchased at the Capitol Market in Charleston. Winners were Patty Stowers, Maxine Justice, Shirley Brown, Lounice Jeffrey, Bill McNeely and Delores Spears.

The 39 members and guests attending the meeting were Peggy Mosley, Patricia Doczi, Gretchen Donahue, Mayor Jim Blevins, Rev. Randy and Judy Sites, Shirley and Zettie Brown, Betty Gentry, Sherry Frye, Dotty Doczi, Arthur and Barbara Brunty, Bob and Dixie Frazier, Dr. Rallos, Pebble Vance, Elizabeth Tackett, Mae Osborne, Patty Stowers, Maxine Justice, Alice Harrison, Bill and Donna McNeely, Angeline Bassham, Jean Wintz, Garnet Triplett, Lou Arnold, Merlin and Delores Spears, Barbara Spears, Norma Jean Nelson, Elmer and Lounice Jeffrey, Jane Grimmette, JoAnne Hensley, Lessie Bailey, and Frank and Elaine Thompson.

The next START meeting will be at noon Thursday, August 22, in the fellowship hall of Bruce McDonald United Methodist Church.
