BREEDEN - An arrest on charges of cruelty to animals and shooting a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling has been filed in Mingo County Magistrate Court by Sgt. J.W. Muncy and Cpl. C.G. Endicott of the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department, (MCSD) against Matthew Deskins, age unknown, from Breeden.
According to the complaint, the defendant did shoot a dog (family pet) belonging to Barbara Spurlock, also of Breeden, after she let the dog outside her home to use the bathroom. According to the victim and other witnesses, Deskins allegedly shot twice at the animal, striking it in the head. The animal is said to have made it as far as a neighbor’s yard before collapsing and crawling under the porch, where it died.
The owner of the dog was in close proximity to the animal during the shooting, and other family members were also inside the home sleeping when the incident occurred. The defendant is said to have fled the scene after fatally wounding the dog.
Deskins was arraigned before Mingo County Magistrate Pam Newsome and was incarcerated in the Southwestern Regional Jail until such time he posted bond and was released. The defendant is scheduled to appear in magistrate court in the near future to answer these charges.
