Upward Look — Delight Thyself Also In The Lord
By Mae Stallard
“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
If you was asked the question “What do you desire most?” what would be your answer? The psalmist revealed that we should trust the Lord and do good. We should delight ourselves in the Lord and He will give us the desires of our heart.
What a blessed promise this is to the trusting Christian. As we think of that which is most important to us, that which we want more than anything else in the world, for some people it would be an easy decision. A person who has a member of her family who is very sick would probably ask the Lord for healing of her loved one. Others might ask for help in raising their children, or for a happier relationship with their husband or wife. Still others might ask for more material wealth, fame, opportunities to travel or achieve success in their individual careers or business ventures.
As Christians, our greatest desire should be to please our Lord, to serve Him to the best of our ability. As we remember the story of Solomon, the son of King David, we see that God appeared to him in a dream and asked him what he would like to have. Instead of asking for riches, the life of his enemies, or for long life, he asked for wisdom and knowledge to rule his people.
Because he did not ask for personal gain that would benefit himself, but asked for that which would help others, the Lord gave him wisdom and knowledge, as well as riches, wealth, and honour. We learn from this story that we cannot outgive the Lord. He will give to us that which will have eternal value. Who could ask for more?
Trust in the Lord, and do good,
Delight thyself also in the Lord,
And the desires of thy heart,
Will be your reward.
The Lord wants what is best for us,
And we can trust Him with our lives,
And the blessings He gives to us,
Will always suffice.
Dear Lord, May the desire of my life be to live and serve you. In Jesus name I pray. A-men.
