Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Why am I here?” I’m sure most of us have asked that at least once if not more in our lifetime. I know that I certainly have. We must believe that we are here, on earth, at this very moment for a divine reason. We are here on purpose and for a purpose. That purpose is not to simply breathe the oxygen that God has created in our atmosphere. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I believe that we are here to make a difference, to change the world, to inspire and encourage others. Our lives are not just about ourselves. We directly or indirectly affect others in just about everything we say or do.

Is your purpose being fulfilled in your place of employment? If you are a school teacher, are you making a difference in the lives of the children that are entrusted to you? If you are a doctor or a nurse, are you changing your patients’ lives by giving them the best healthcare possible? If you are in politics, are you taking action to help your county, state, or country? If you are a parent or a grandparent, are you raising your children with love and teaching them about respect and morals? If you are a pastor or leader in your church, are you feeding your flock the true Word of God and doing so in love? Whatever you are doing in life, employed or not, are you doing it to the best of your ability? Are you striving for excellence? Are you fulfilling your purpose?

According to Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do,” we are here to do a work for God, a work with divine purpose. We truly need to know what our purpose is and if we are not sure, then I feel that we need to ask our Heavenly Father exactly what it is that He wants us to do. It could be something huge or it could be something small, but whatever our purpose is, we need to accomplish it and do it with excellence. Does God deserve anything less than our very best? Does our fellow man deserve anything less than the very best that we have to offer?

Romans 8:28 declares, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.” This is proving that God has a purpose for our being here. We may be the one who speaks the words to one person or to a million people that will impact and change lives forever. We could be the very one who simply smiles at another or gives a simple hug and to us it could really not be such a big thing. To the person getting the smile or the hug, it could change their course of their day or even their lives.

Romans 14:7 says, “For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone.” We cannot be selfish with the gifts or talents or the time that God has blessed us with. We must give of ourselves. We need to realize that we are here for a reason and that our purpose is not just for us, but it is for those that the Lord purposefully sends across our path of life. Life is short and the time we have here should be well spent. If today was your very last day on earth, could you leave here knowing that you have deposited all that God has put in you? Would you be able to stand before the Lord of Lords and King of Kings and say, “I truly did my very best. I deposited everything that You placed in me while on earth.”

I once heard a man say that a graveyard is the richest place on earth. He explained that a cemetery is filled with people who did not complete their mission in life and that graves are filled with so many songs that were never sung, so many sermons that were never preached, and so many ideas that were never patented. A cemetery is filled with books that were never written, and pictures that will never be painted, and so many thoughts and feelings that will never be expressed. When it is our time to go, may we leave completely empty. Let us resolve in our hearts to find our purpose and fulfill that purpose in order to impact and change the world we live in while we are here.
