The Logan High School golf team is poised for what could be their best season ever.

On Monday, three of the starting lineup golfers qualified and competed in the final championship event for the Callaway Junior Tour at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Clarksburg.

The event featured the top 24 junior golfers in four age divisions.

Logan seniors J.C. Motes and Samuel Corns competed in the 17-18 division; while junior Chase Preston represented the Wildcats in the 15-16 division.

Logan was led by Motes, who posted a 7-over par 79 on the very tough PGA level course — a score good enough to earn him a top 10 finish. Preston had a very impressive round of 81, while Corns finished with an 84.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play 12 regular season matches as well as a few invitational events along the way.

Fourteen-year head coach, Cliff Motes said he’s excited about the coming season.

“I’ve known this group since they first picked up a golf club and I can tell you, they are as good as any team in the state and they are certainly the best team I’ve ever coached,” Coach Motes said. “I don’t know of another high school in the state that had three of its players qualify for the Callaway Championship. These guys are good.”

Logan made it to the state tournament two years ago, but fell short last year, narrowly losing in the Class AAA regional round to Cabell-Midland and Winfield.

“This team knows they should have been there last year, but every player seemed to have his worst outing at the Regional Championship,” Coach Motes said. “That won’t happen this year. They are much more focused, mature and committed to the game. These boys have something to prove and I believe they are the high school team to watch this year.”

The Logan squad will open this season’s high school play on August 14, hosting Charleston Catholic on their home course at the Logan Country Club in Chapmanville.

It is one of only three matches the team will play at the LCC.
