When Thanksgiving week arrives each year that can only mean one thing.


Basketball season is just around the corner.


The high school girls’ hoop season begins in the first week of December while the boys’ season is set to start the week of Dec. 9.


The Logan High School girls, 17-10 last year and the Class AAA state runner-ups, are slated to play first as the Lady Cats travel to county rival Man to take on the Lady Billies on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse in a 7:30 p.m. contest. Man’s girls also made it to state last season as the Lady Billies were beaten in the first round of the Class A state tournament by five-time state champion Huntington St. Joe.


The Lady Cats then play at South Charleston on Dec. 11 and then take on St. Joe on Dec. 14 as part of Chapmanville’s inaugural Nationwide Classic at the Danny Godby Gymnasium.


Logan’s girls then travel to Tolsia on Dec. 18 before having its home opener on Dec. 20 against Class AAA sectional rival Huntington. The Lady Cats knocked off the Highlanders 78-70 last year in the first round of the sectional tourney at Huntington High School.


The Logan-Huntington game was moved in recent days from Dec. 6 to the 20th.


The Lady Cats follow that up with a road game on Dec. 26 at Spring Valley, another sectional rival. Logan lost to Spring Valley in the regular season last year and in the sectional finals before beating the Lady Wolves 52-49 in the state tourney semifinals.


Logan closes out the 2013 portion of the season with a road game on Dec. 30 at Chapmanville.


After playing Logan, the Man Lady Billies go to Sherman on Dec. 6, host Cross Lanes Christian on Dec. 9, play at Mount View on Dec. 16 and host Buffalo on Dec. 19 and Williamstown on Dec. 20.


The Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ basketball team is scheduled to open its 2013-14 roundball campaign on Dec. 4 at Wayne in a Cardinal Conference contest.


The Lady Tigers then have their home opener on Dec. 10 against Herbert Hoover before playing at Poca on Dec. 12 and at home against Pikeview on Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. as part of the Nationwide Classic. The Chapmanville girls go to sectional foe Mingo Central on Dec. 18 and host Tolsia on Dec. 21 before playing host to Logan on Dec. 30.


The Logan boys have five games scheduled before the new year and open Dec. 12 at Hurricane in a rematch of last year’s Class AAA regional co-final. The Wildcats then play Scott on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. in Chapmanville’s Nationwide Classic before taking on St. Albans on Dec. 21 in the George Washington tourney. Logan then has its home opener on Dec. 28 against sectional foe Cabell Midland before hosting George Washington on Dec. 30.


The Chapmanville boys are set to open the season on Dec. 14 at home against Liberty Raleigh in the Nationwide Classic. Tipoff is 8:30 p.m. The Tigers then go to Herbert Hoover on Dec. 17 in a conference game and then take on North Marion on Dec. 21 at noon in the Hoops Classic at the Charleston Civic Center. The Tigers host Lincoln County on Dec. 23 and then play host to the annual Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-28 at CRHS.


The Man Hillbillies don’t open the season until Dec. 17 with a home game against Mount View. Man then travels to Montcalm on Dec. 20 and plays in Chapmanville’s holiday tourney Dec. 27-28.
