CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Middle School girls’ basketball team won its own holiday tournament last weekend with wins over Kermit and Fort Gay.

The Lady Tigers then returned to the hardwood and won at Sherman.

Last Friday, the CMS girls won 63-14 over Kermit in the CMS tourney, which was held at the Chapmanville Middle School gym.

Beth Ball led the way with 10 points, followed by Madison Webb, Kaylee Blair and Kelsey Lemmon with eight each. Haven Adkins had six points and Chloe Sweeney had five. Nadia Perry, Emily Davis and Cheyenne Armstrong tossed in four each, while Jada Freeman, Reese Ellis and Kaleigh Davis all had two each.

“We had a good running game providing us with several layups. We got to play a lot of our young kids and get some valuable playing time,” CMS girls’ coach Tommy Kirk said.

Then on Saturday night, Chapmanville edged Fort Gay, 34-30, in the tournament championship game, also held at the CMS gym.

Ball again led CMS with 10 points. Webb had nine, Blair seven and Freeman and Perry had four each.

“Fort Gay was big and very scrappy. We let them outrebound us badly,” Coach Kirk said. “We missed way too many chip shots around the basket and several layups off the break. We just found away to win. We shot ourselves in the foot all day. They played us hard and we couldn’t break away from them.”

Then on Monday night, CMS won easily at conference foe Sherman, 53-28.

Freeman paced the Lady Tigers with a 12-point effort. Webb also broke into double figures with 11 points. Blair and Perry netted eight each. Ball had six, Adkins four and Armstrong and Shea Pridemore had two each.

“This was our best effort of the season. We finally played good team defense. Our defense tonight jump-started our offense with several fast-break chances and we cashed in on most of them for once,” Kirk said. “We actually ran some nice half court sets. We are starting to get more familiar with each other and the roles we play.”

Sherman was led by Dejah Busby who poured in 21 points.

CMS is scheduled to host its holiday JV tourney Dec. 26-28 with girls and boys teams from Madison, Lenore, Sherman, Harts, Ripley, Man, Hamlin and Van taking part.

The games start around 10 a.m. each day and will last until the evening.
