It was a huge win for the Logan High School girls’ basketball team, which knocked off visiting Morgantown, 59-44, on Saturday afternoon at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena in a battle of Class AAA state powers.

Monica Mitchell and Shayna Gore each had double-doubles for Logan (5-3).

Mitchell, a 6-foot-2 sophomore center, poured in 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lady Cats.

Shayna Gore had 16 points and 10 assists despite battling foul trouble early in the game.

Lexi Hines added 12 points for Logan.

Olivia Seggie paced Morgantown (5-3) with 12 points.

Logan jumped out to a 14-4 lead on Morgantown in the first quarter and led 14-13 after one as the Lady Mohigans battled back.

The Lady Cats then started to pull away, outscoring Morgantown 17-9 in the second to take a 31-22 halftime lead.

Logan held an 11-9 edge in the third and led 42-31. The Lady Cats then outpointed the Lady Mohigans 17-13 in the fourth to put the win on ice.

Kyra Cline added five points for Logan. Summer Collins and Hannah Kolovich had one point each.

Gore was honored before the game for recently surpassing the 1,000 career point plateau. The junior is already second on Logan’s all-time career scoring list.

Logan returns to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. at home against county rival Chapmanville in the annual King Coal Classic tourney. The game had originally been slated for 2 p.m.

Logan then hosts Belfry (Ky.) on Jan. 15 in a game which was added to the schedule recently.
