Sherman dropped the Man High School boys’ basketball team to 3-3 on the season with Wednesday night’s 69-68 victory over the Hillbillies at the Sherman High School gym in Seth.
The contest was a makeup game.
The two teams were originally slated to play on Tuesday night but it was postponed a day due to weather.
Man led the Tide 9-8 after one quarter and fell behind 31-28 at the half before the Billies outpointed Sherman 26-18 in the third to retake a 54-49 lead after three.
The Tide then came out on top of the see-saw battle in the fourth quarter after outscoring Man 20-14.
Sophomore guard John Thomas Keffer poured in 25 points to lead the Billies. Freshman Joey Buchanon added 21 for Man, while Jake Adkins tossed in 12 and Kenny Joe Adkins 10.
Senior Cody Muncy led Sherman with 17 points. Joseph Smith added 16 and Blake Brewer 12 points and six rebounds for the Tide.
Brewer scored the game winning basket on a layup with 15 seconds left in the game.
Leading 68-67 with 25 seconds left and possession of the ball, Man’s Kenny Joe Adkins had the ball stolen from him by Smith who raced up court and found a streaking Brewer heading to the basket. Brewer was able to get the shot over the outstretched arm of Cayce Mullins and banked it off the glass for the eventual game winner.
Keffer also dished out nine assists and had five rebounds. Keffer fueled a third quarter rally as he knocked down his first four 3-point attempts on his way to 16 third quarter points to help Man erase a three-point halftime deficit.
The Hillbillies controlled the glass holding a 41-29 edge in the rebounding column led by Buchanon’s 12 boards. Jake Adkins finished with nine rebounds. Kenny Jo Adkins also dished out five assists while Mullins, who was held scoreless, pulled down nine rebounds for Man.
Man shot 54.9 percent, hitting 28-of-51 from the field. The Hillbillies knocked down 5-of-13 3-point attempts and managed to shoot 7-of-12 from the charity stripe. Sherman hit just 27-of-72 attempts for 37.5 percent. The Tide were 4-of-22 from 3-point land and connected on 11-of-18 free throw attempts.
Sherman improved to 3-2 on the season with the win. Man and Sherman are not scheduled to play each other again during the regular season.
Man was slated to play at River View on Thursday night. The Billies are at Chapmanville next Tuesday, then host Montcalm on Jan. 17 before playing Wesley Christian (Ky.) on Jan. 18 in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at the Williamson Fieldhouse.
Man then plays at Tug Valley on Jan. 22. The Panthers have won two straight state championships — in 2012 as a Class AA team and last year as a Single-A member.
