MAN — Win number two came for the Man High School girls’ basketball team on Thursday night as the Lady Billies won 45-36 over Sherman at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Senior Morgan Conn led the Man attack with 21 points, while freshman Hunter Harvey chipped in with 12 points.

The Lady Billies improved to 2-6 on the season with the win.

Man coach Tonia Ward was happy with the victory.

“They played good team ball,” Ward said. “Morgan had a good game. All the girls are coming along. We’re still young. We’re mostly made up of freshmen and sophomores with just one senior in Morgan Conn.”

Man jumped out to an early 10-3 lead and took a slim 10-7 advantage after the opening period of play.

The Lady Billies pushed their lead to 17-11 at the 3:42 mark of the second stanza on a fast break layup by Conn.

Sherman’s Kendra Pannell then hit two free throws to make it 17-13 with 3:33 to go.

Conn later scored on an offensive stickback to give the Lady Billies a 19-14 lead at the intermission.

Conn jumpstarted the Lady Billies to open the second half of play, scoring on a fast break layup and a floater in the lane to give Man a nine-point lead at 23-14 with 6:35 to go in the third quarter.

The Lady Tide then went on a 5-0 run to cut the Man deficit to 23-19 with 5:51 on the third quarter clock on a Bailey Harless tear drop basket and 3-pointer by Jordan Lewis.

Hunter Harvey then drained a trey of her own to make it 26-19.

However, Sherman’s Harless hit back-to-back baskets to make it 26-23 with 4:36 to go.

Man’s Mika McCoy then hit a free throw late to give Man a 29-23 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Freshman Haley Daniels then sank a bucket to give MHS a 33-25 lead at the 6:41 mark.

Man pushed its lead to 38-29 on a layup by McCoy with 3:54 left in the game.

Conn then sealed the deal as she connected on 5-of-7 free throws in the final two minutes of play to preserve the victory and give Man a hard fought 45-36 win.

Hannah Harvey added six points for Man. Daniels had four and McCoy two.

Sherman was led by Kendra Pannell with 16 points. Harless had 10, while Sara Massey had seven. Lewis had two and Paige Halstead one.

The Lady Billies’ next game is Monday on the road at Greater Beckley Christian.
