WILLIAMSON — A slow start plagued the Man High School boys’ basketball team during the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout against Wesley Christian Academy (Ky.) on Saturday.

The Hillbillies dug themselves an early 36-point first half deficit and fell to the Wesley Christian Academy Circuit Riders, 82-54, in the 11th-annual Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at the Williamson Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Circuit Riders, a member of the Kentucky Christian Athletic Association, shot 51.7 percent from the floor to improve to 21-6 on the season. Man finished at 40.3 percent from the floor, but the damage was done in the first half when Wesley Christian made 20-of-32 shots overall and 5-of-10 from 3-point range while holding the Hillbillies to just nine field goals on 24 attempts.

Josh Amuzu led Wesley Christian with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Malik McDonald added 19 points connecting on 5-of-9 3-point attempts. Thomas Hall had 15 and Abraham Oayebuchi 14 for the Circuit Riders. Corey Dalton had seven, Colton Caldwell four and Devein Kendrick two to round out the scoring for Wesley Christian.

Sophomore John Thomas Keffer led Man with 23 points. He made 10-of-23 attempts and connected on 3-of-11 3-point attempts. Jake Adkins added 15 points and eight rebounds to join Keffer in double figures. No other Hillbilly scored in double figures after three did in Man’s win over Montcalm.

Daniel Buchanon finished with six points while Rodney Morgan and Marquel Brown each had five, Erik Files three and Cayce Mullins one.

McDonald knocked down his first two 3-pointers to help Wesley to an 11-3 lead before Man answered with back-to-back baskets from Buchanon and Keffer to trim the deficit to 11-7.

It would as close as the Hillbillies would get as the Circuit Riders closed the quarter on a 16-3 run to lead 27-10 after one quarter. The lead would balloon to 36 points in the second quarter before Wesley Christian settled for a 56-23 halftime lead.

The Circuit Riders extended its lead to 39 points with an 8-1 run to start the third quarter, but Man answered with an 18-2 run to trim the deficit to 65-42 after three quarters. The Hillbillies would score the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut it to 18, but could get no closer as the Circuit Riders outscored the Hillbillies 17-16 in the final quarter for the 28-point victory.

Man returns to action Wednesday night at Tug Valley before returning home to host Class A No. 1 Huntington St. Joe on Friday night.
