NEWTOWN — Mingo Central High School will be looking for a new head baseball coach as Walt Cline has officially resigned from that position.
Cline tendered his letter of resignation late last week to principal Teresa Jones and Athletic Director Teddy Kinder. Cline served as head baseball coach for the Miners the first year of the school. Last spring he took a medical leave of absence. The team was guided by Roger Station, who was assisted by Bob Huff.
“I have given much thought and consideration concerning the baseball program at Mingo Central High School (MCHS),” Cline said. “It is my understanding that there is no immediate plan in place to build a field at the school. The blueprints that were shown to the coaches for the proposed facilities that were promised to the communities are no closer to being a reality than before the opening of MCHS. This creates a hardship on students that participate.”
He said it is difficult for many students who live in outlying areas to play because of the distance they are required to travel for practice and for games.
“A baseball field at Mingo Central is necessary to provide the same opportunities as the football and basketball programs,” Cline said.
Currently, the team has played games at Gilbert and at Lefty Hamilton Park in Williamson.
“I can’t properly prepare the players under the current circumstances and do not wish to embarrass players and myself without the basic skills,” Cline said. “I hope in the near future all the students will be provided the opportunities necessary to participate and be successful. I don’t feel it is in my best interest to continue to serve as head baseball Coach at Mingo Central. By resigning at this time it will allow administration sufficient time to send a representative to the coach’s baseball clinic and hire a new coach. I will make myself available to answer any questions necessary to transition a new coach into the position, should you wish to contact me.”
Cline said he hopes that the administration and others will continue to lobby for a new baseball field for MCHS.
