Man sweeps past Phelps (Ky.) again

PHELPS, Ky. — The Man High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams made it a sweep over Phelps (Ky.) again on Wednesday night at Phelps.
The Lady Billies won 48-43 in the opener. The Man High School boys then won 77-68 over Phelps in the second game.
Both teams had swept Phelps last Friday night at Man.
In the boys’ game, John Thomas Keffer led Man with 21 points, 11 assists and six rebounds.
Freshman Daniel Buchanon also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Jake Adkins added 18 points and Kenny Joe Adkins had 11 points and eight assists.
Erik Files had seven points for the Hillbillies. Gabby Brown and Josh Adkins had four each and freshman Cameron Simpson, the brother of Man’s all-time leading scorer Jordan Simpson, had two points.
Phelps was led by Elijah Branham’s 23 points. Seth Prater had 10.
The Billies jumped out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter of play. Man led 35-33 at the half as Branham hit two 3-pointers.
The Hornets then outscored Man 19-17 in the third quarter to tie it up 52-52 heading into the final eight minutes of play. The Billies then outscored the Hornets 25-16 in the fourth.
Jake Adkins got hot for Man in the fourth quarter as he hit three big buckets to give the Billies a 60-54 advantage with 4:30 to go.
Kenny Joe Adkins got a steal and fast break layup with 2:16 to play to give the Billies a 68-61 lead with 2:16 to play.
Man hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes of play to preserve the win.
Keffer was 5-of-6 at the line and Buchanon was 2-for-2 as Man came away with the hard fought win.
The Billies improved to 8-7 on the season and traveled to Greater Beckley Christian on Friday night.
In the girls’ game, Man was paced by senior Morgan Conn’s 22 points. Mika McCoy finished with 11. Freshman Haylee Daniels added seven while Hannah Harvey netted five and Hunter Harvey two.
Phelps was led in scoring by Catilyn Muncy’s 19 points. Danessa Maynard finished with 13.
The Lady Billies led 11-9 after one quarter, 28-16 at the half and 33-28 after three. Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth.
Man lost 59-48 at Class AA Wyoming East on Monday night.
The Lady Billies (6-10) play at Buffalo on Feb. 12. Man then hosts Mount View on Feb. 13 before going to Williamstown on Feb. 15 in a makeup game.
