The Man High School boys’ basketball team led by as many as 18 in the second half, but had to hold off a late charge by Mount View for a hard fought 62-54 victory at Mount View High School Monday night.

The Hillbillies led 48-30 late in the third quarter, but the Golden Knights never quit and scored 19 unanswered to take a 49-48 lead with 5:30 to play in the final period. Man responded with an 11-0 as the Billies held on for the victory.

John Thomas Keffer led three Hillbillies in double figures with 20 points. Jake Adkins added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Kenny Joe Adkins added 10 points for Man. Daniel Buchanon just missed a double-double finishing with eight points and a team high 12 rebounds. Marquel Brown added five points and Erik Files and Cameron Simpson each had two points for the Hillbillies.

Rashawn Brooks led Mount View with 18 points while Donnell Bonds added 17. Kobe Brown scored seven points while Kenneth Brown, Jaedon Burress and Marlin Marrs each had four points and Marquis Bonds and Ellis Bryson had one point apiece for the Golden Knights.

Man led 10-8 after the first quarter before extending their margin to 30-18 at halftime. The two teams played to a stalemate in the third quarter as the Hillbillies took a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

Man connected on 21-of-45 field goal attempts including 4-of-11 from beyond the arc and converted 18-of-24 free throw attempts. Mount View made good on 23-of-50 attempts from the field including 2-of-9 from 3-point range and was 8-of-16 from the foul line.

Led by Buchanon’s 12 boards and Adkins’ 11, the Hillbillies controlled the glass owning a 32-18 advantage for the contest.

Man improved to 9-9 with the victory while Mt. View fell to 4-12 with the loss. It was the third victory in as many tries for the Hillbillies over the Golden Knights. Man opened its season with a convincing 68-47 victory over Mt. View on December 17 at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse. The Hillbillies then defeated the Golden Knights, 55-50, in the consolation round of the Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament at Chapmanville High School on December 28.

Man was scheduled to return to action Tuesday night as they hosted the Belfry (Ky.) Pirates.

The Hillbillies hit the road Friday night, traveling to Class A No. 2 Huntington St. Joe. The then top-ranked Irish defeated the Hillbillies 62-60 at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse on January 24.

Man will close out the regular season Feb. 25, against county rival and co-Class AA No. 9 Chapmanville. The Tigers handed the Hillbillies a 58-47 setback on January 14 at Chapmanville Regional High School.
