CLEAR FORK — It was a statement game for the Logan High School girls’ basketball team which went to Westside on Wednesday night and won 62-57 over the Lady Renegades in the regular season finale at Clear Fork.
Logan (12-7), gained a measure of revenge with the win.
Westside, the 2012 Class AA state champions and last year’s 2A state runner-ups, had swept the Lady Cats last season and won 65-63 at Logan on Feb. 4 this season.
Logan was also a state runner-up last season at the Class AAA level and now turn its focus to next Wednesday’s 3A sectional game at Huntington against the homestanding Highlanders in a rematch of last year’s section opener.
The Lady Cats, which beat Huntington, 62-54, at home in the only meeting between the two schools this season, are set to face off with the Highlanders next Wednesday at 8 p.m. No. 1 seed Spring Valley plays either Cabell Midland or Lincoln County in the 6 p.m. game.
The two winners advance to the Friday, Feb. 28 Class AAA sectional championship game. Regardless of the outcome both teams will then move on to the regional tourney.
That means the Logan-Huntington winner moves on, not only to the sectional finals but also the regional tourney. The loser will see its season come to a close.
Logan knocked off Huntington, 78-70, in last year’s sectionals before falling to Spring Valley in the sectional title game. Logan then went to St. Albans and won over the Red Dragons in the regional tourney to advance to the state tourney where LHS won two games and then lost to Parkersburg South in the state finals.
In Wednesday night’s game, Shayna Gore led Logan with 23 points. Monica Mitchell tossed in 20 and freshman Lexi Hines had 11.
Daniel Brown, Hope Lester and Faith Daniels all hit for double figures for Westside.
Man 52, Buffalo 48
BUFFALO — The Man High School girls’ basketball team went to Buffalo on Wednesday night and won 52-48 to improve to 8-11 on the season.
The Lady Billies were slated to host River View Wednesday night in the regular season finale.
