CHAPMANVILLE — After a four-year hiatus, the Chapmanville and Man high school softball teams finally met on Monday night at Chapmanville Regional High School.
The game expected to be a tight one and it was just that as Chapmanville squeaked past its county rival 7-6.
Chapmanville (3-2) won the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the score tied, the Lady Tigers won with two outs with a runner on second as a routine fly ball to the outfield off the bat of Shian Meeks was dropped for an error, allowing the winning run to score.
Man had built a 4-0 lead with one run in the third and three more in the fourth. Chapmanville then plated six big runs in the last half of the fourth to make it 6-4. The Lady Billies (2-2) then tied it with a two-spot in the top of the seventh.
Meeks had a triple for Chapmanville and reached base safely three other times on a pair of walks and the game-winning error.
CRHS pitcher Cydnee Lambert had a double while freshman Faith Bell was 2-for-4 with two singles.
Samarah Hurst, Savannah Wiley and Caitlin Elkins all singled. Wiley also reached twice via bases on balls.
Kelli Grimmett and Cari Blair were both 2-for-4 with two singles to lead Man. Emily Toler doubled and Hannah Harvey, Madison Keffer, Grace Cline and Casey Alright all singled. Keffer pitched for Man.
Monday night’s game was the first meeting between the two softball teams since 2010 when Chapmanville beat the Lady Billies 7-2 in the Lady Tigers Invitational at CRHS.
Chapmanville has dominated the series with Man and lead the Lady Billies 13-1 dating back to 2000.
The last victory by Man over the Lady Tigers was in the memorable 2000 Class AA Region 4 championship game at the old Chapmanville High School softball field when the Lady Billies upset the then defending state champion Chapmanville Lady Tigers 1-0 to advance to the state tournament. Shanda Ross tossed a one-hitter in the game as Man avenged two earlier defeats in the regular season to the Lady Tigers.
Chapmanville and Man also met in 2008, 2007, 2005 and 2004 in Chapmanville’s annual April tourney with the Lady Tigers winning every time. Man won back-to-back Class A state championships in 2008 and 2009 in the Marlena Frye era and lost a bid for a third straight title in 2010 as Man fell in the state championship game to South Harrison.
The 2008 meeting was a close one with Chapmanville winning 2-1.
Some of the other games were also close. Back in 2001, the Lady Tigers nipped homestanding Man 3-2 in eight innings and later took a 2-0 victory over the Lady Billies in the Chapmanville tourney.
CRHS was scheduled to return to action with Tuesday night’s game at Mingo Central.
Chapmanville then hosts the annual Lady Tigers Invitational this weekend beginning with the Thursday 9 p.m. contest against Sherman. On Friday, CRHS plays James Monroe at 5 p.m. Then on Saturday, the Lady Tigers play host to Pikeview at 1 p.m. and Richwood at 5 p.m. in tourney action.
The Lady Billies were slated to host Westside on Tuesday night. Man then hosts Tug Valley on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before heading back to Chapmanville this weekend for the Lady Tigers Invitational.
In the tourney, Man plays Scott on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Chapmanville Middle School softball diamond. The Lady Billies then play Richwood on Friday at 7 p.m. and Poca on Saturday at 1 p.m. in tournament games.
