MAN — The Man High School softball team scored a thrilling come-from-behind 6-5 win in extra innings over Fayetteville on Tuesday night at home.
Man (10-10) won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as freshman Hunter Harvey hit a hard ground ball to shortstop with the bases loaded and nobody out, allowing Emily Toler to score the winnning run. Toler had led off the inning with a single.
Senior ace pitcher Madison Keffer picked up the win on the mound for the Lady Billies.
Fayetteville had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first inning off Keffer, but the Lady Billies battled back to knot the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first off Lady Pirates hurler Kaitland Sisler.
Freshman Sidney Keffer had an RBI bunt single to make it 2-1 and the Lady Billies tied the game an RBI single off the bat of senior Casey Albright to make it 2-2 game.
Fayetteville got the lead back in the top of the second, scoring two times to take a 4-2 advantage. Sisler helped her own cause with a two-run single.
Man was able to tie the game back up once again in the home half of the fifth inning off Sisler as Hunter Harvey led off with a double and scored as Sidney Keffer delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2. Cari Blair then scored Keffer after she went to second and third on wild pitches as Blair smacked a single to right field to make it a 4-4 ballgame.
The Lady Pirates took the lead back in the top of the seventh inning off Keffer as Sisler walked and later scored on a two-out double by Ashley Gilkerson for a 5-4 lead.
Man battled back in the bottom of the seventh inning as Sidney Keffer got a one-out double, went to third on a ground out by Blair and then her big sister Madison Keffer ripped an RBI double to knot the game up at 5-5. Albright grounded out to end the frame, thus sending the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, Fayetteville’s Alexis Roles led off with a double but made a huge mistake trying to stretch it into a triple and was gunned down at third base for the first out.
Keffer then got the next two batters out on ground outs and then had a strikeout to end the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Man’s Toler led off with a single. Hannah Harvey reached on a error and Sisler then hit Elizabeth Dickerson with a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Hunter Harvey then won it with her hard grounder to short to score the winning run.
The Lady Billies were slated to return to the diamond with Wednesday night’s home game against Scott. Man is then at Tug Valley on Thursday before hosting Van on Friday at 5:30 and Wyoming East on Saturday at 1.
Next week, Man plays at county rival Logan on Monday and goes to Charleston Catholic on April 30.
