HAMLIN — Legendary Hamlin High School boys basketball Coach Charles Elkins passed away Tuesday morning following a lengthy illness.

Elkins, who coached the former Hamlin High Bobcats for years, was most recently honored as the individual who had attended the most state high school boys basketball tournaments.

The legendary coach, whose teams often excelled and once reached the Class A finals in the state tourney, attended last month’s tournament at the Charleston Civic Center. He was 85.

His two sons with wife Rose Elkins, Bill and Charles “Chuck” Elkins, followed their father’s footsteps into coaching. Son Bill succeeded his father as Bobcat coach and Chuck Elkins has served for decades as head coach at Buffalo High School in Putnam County. Bill Elkins was the first boys basketball coach at the consolidated Lincoln County High in Hamlin, where his father remained a strong supporter of the athletic program.

In addition to coaching, Charles Elkins was a principal and administrator and was also well-known for his volunteer work as a member of the Hamlin Lions Club. He was a staunch supporter of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. His vehicle license plate sported the tag, “HAMLIN.”

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Fri., April 25, at Charles E. Elkins Gymnasium at Hamlin Middle School (formerly Hamlin High).Funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Handley Funeral Home in Hamlin.
