CHAPMANVILLE — The high school football careers of Chapmanville Regional High School’s Brady Cox and Gabe Maynard are not yet over.

Cox and Maynard were invited to play in the June 21 North-South Football Classic at Charleston’s Laidley Field and it was known quite awhile ago.

On Thursday, the official rosters were released by Game Director Bob Mullett and Cox and Maynard were indeed on the South Cardinals’ roster.

Cox is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound senior tight end for Chapmanville. He’s headed to play collegiate football at Division II West Virginia State.

Cox played on both sides of the ball for the Tigers but was better known for his pass-catching ability either as a tight end or deployed out wide as a wide receiver. Last season, Cox had 48 catches for 746 yards — and average of 15.5 yards per grab. He also scored eight touchdows. On the defensive side of the ball last year as a safety, Cox made 64 total tackles with two interceptions.

Maynard is a 6-4, 270-pound lineman. Last season on defense, Maynard had 12 total tackles. The bulk of his snaps came on Chapmanville’s offensive line. He’s headed to play Division II ball at Glenville State College.

Chapmanville coach George Barker said he’s pleased to see two of his players get named to the North-South.

“It’s probably one of the biggest honors that a high school football can get — to get to play in the state-wide all-star game,” Barker said. “It’s a great experience. If you are getting ready to play at the next level it sort of paves the way for you. It’s just a great experience for those kids.”

Also invited to play in this year’s North-South Game were area players Jacob Summe (6-0, 192 RB/LB) of Wyoming East and Mingo Central wide receiver/defensive back Alex Lee (6-4, 170).

This year’s game features 73 graduating senior football players representing 45 West Virginia high schools.

Bill Haddox of East Fairmont High School is the head coach of the North Bears, with assistant coaches Chad Davidson and Rick Morgan of East Fairmont and Gregg Hott of Elkins.

Lewis McClung of Greenbrier West High School is the South Cardinals head coach, with assistant coaches Jeremy Tincher and Kelly Vaughan of Greenbrier West and Gene Morris of Nicholas.

The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. on June 21.
