NAUGATUCK — It was no trouble at all for the Man High School baseball team on Monday night at Tug Valley.
The Hillbillies went to Naugatuck and took care of business as Man blanked the Tug Valley Panthers, 12-0, in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class A sectional series.
Game 2 shifted to Man on Tuesday where the Billies were expected to win and wrap up the sectional championship. With the section crown Man would move on to play next week in the Class A regional semifinals. Man beat Tug last year two games to none in the sectionals.
Man improved to 15-10 on the season with the win. TVHS is 5-11-1.
It was the first meeting between the Billies and the Panthers this season. Man last traveled to Tug Valley on April 3 and led the Panthers 7-0 in the third inning when the game was suspended due to lightning and rain. The game was rescheduled later in the season as part of a doubleheader at Man but that, too, was also rained out.
The Billies scored two runs in the first inning, three more in the second and six in the third on Monday to take an 11-0 lead. Man added an insurance run in the fifth. The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Jake Adkins notched the complete game win on the mound for Man as he fired five innings and allowed no runs and two hits with 13 strikeouts and no walks.
Tug Valley pitchers had control issues as Man drew 11 walks.
Ethan Hager was the starter and loser for Tug Valley. He was tagged for 12 runs (eight earned) on nine hits over four innings. He fanned five and walked nine. Travin Horn pitched the last innning and walked two.
Braden Griffin hit a two-run homer for Man. Kenny Joe Adkins had a triple and an RBI. Baley Beckwith was 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Cameron Simpson, Cayce Mullins, John Thomas Keffer, Tyler Blair and Seth Chapman all had singles. Blair knocked in three runs. Keffer also had an RBI.
Horn and Phillip Lucas had one hit each for the Panthers.
* Man wrapped up the Class A sectional championship with Tuesday night’s 14-0 victory at home over Tug Valley.
As expected, the Billies swept the section series with the Panthers 2-0.
Man advanced to the regional tourney with the victory and are two wins away from reaching the state tournament.
