MAN — A summertime tradition begins this week with the start of the District 2 Little League Baseball All-Star tournaments.
Action begins this Saturday as the District 2 Coach Pitch 7-8-year-old Little League tourney is set to get under way at the Man Little League’s Tommy Keffer Field.
The nine-team, round robin tournament is scheduled to be played all week and conclude with the District 2 championship game on Saturday, June 28.
The District 2 9-10-year-old and 11-12-year-old Little League all-star tournaments will then follow. This year’s 11-12 state tourney is slated to be played in Chapmanville next month.
The Coach Pitch tourney is divided into Pool A and Pool B.
Pool A appears to be the tougher of the two as host Man and traditionally Little League strong Chapmanville are in the field, along with Pineville and a pair of Mingo County teams — Tug Valley and Delbarton.
Pool B consists of four teams — Madison, Mullens, Welch and Sandy River.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday at noon as Madison takes on Mullens. The 2 p.m. game has Tug Valley squaring off with Pineville. Then at 4 p.m., Sandy River plays Welch. The 6 p.m. nightcap has host Man playing Delbarton.
On Sunday, four more pool play games are on the slate as Chapmanville plays Tug Valley at noon, Madison takes on Welch at 2 p.m., Sandy River locks horns with Mullens at 4 and Man does battle with Pineville at 6.
The tournament is slated to continue on Monday as Chapmanville takes on Pineville at 6 p.m. and Tug Valley plays Delbarton at 8 in the battle of Mingo County.
On Tuesday, Delbarton plays Pineville at 6 p.m. and Welch squares off with Mullens at 8.
Next Wednesday, June 25, Chapmanville plays Delbarton at 6 p.m. and Man is matched up against Tug Valley at 8.
Pool play is set to conclude on Thursday, June 26. Madison plays Sandy River at 6 p.m. and Man takes on Chapmanville at 8 in the battle of Logan County all-star squads.
On Friday, June 27, the two semifinal games are scheduled to be played. At 6 p.m., the winner of Pool A plays the Pool B second place team. Then at 8 p.m., the Pool B winner is set to take on the Pool A runner-up.
The winners of the two semifinal round games then move on to play each other in the District 2 championship game at 7 p.m. on June 28.
All 19 games are scheduled to be played at the Man Little League field.
The 9-10 and 11-12 brackets have not yet been released by District 2 officials.
