CHAPMANVILLE — The 11-12-year-old District 2 Little League baseball all-star tournament got under way on Monday at Chapmanville’s Tracy Vickers Field as Pineville beat Tug Valley 7-4.


Madison played Welch in the nightcap but no score was available. Madison was leading Welch 15-0 in the second inning at last report.


Tug Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 2-0 after one.


Pineville then plated three runs in the top of the third to grab a 3-2 lead. Pineville then led 6-3 after five and ended up holding on for the 7-4 win.


Hunter Crum had a triple and a double to lead Tug Valley’s offense. Tyler Chaffin also had two hits. Ethan Varney hammered a double for Tug, while Braxton Hanshaw, Christopher Osborne and Sammie Ferris all added hits.


For Pineville, Brandon Simpson led the way with three doubles. Ethan Bradford also doubled, while Gavin Roberts and Justin Bradford had one hit each.


The double-elimination tourney was set to continue on Tuesday evening, weather permitting, as host Chapmanville played Man and Pineville squared off with Mullens, which received a first-round bye.


On Wednesday, the Madison/Welch winner is set to play the Chapmanville/Man winner at 6 p.m. Welch is scheduled to take on the Chapmanville/Man loser at 8 p.m.


Then on Thursday, Tug Valley takes on either Madison, Chapmanville or Man in a loser’s bracket game at 6 p.m. The Mullens/Pineville loser then plays either Welch, Chapmanville or Man at 8 p.m.


The tournament continues on Friday at 6 p.m. with the District 2 championship game at 6 p.m. Another game is to follow at 8 p.m.


The District 2 winner and runner-up are set to advance to play in the upcoming 11-12-year-old State Little League Tournament, scheduled to begin on July 19, also at Chapmanville.
