The Madison All-Stars advanced to the 9-10-year-old State Tournament quarterfinals with a 1-1 showing in pool play over the weekend in the state tourney which was held at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.
Madison, the District 2 champions, lost 13-5 to Shinnston on Sunday after winning 7-1 over Grant County on Saturday. Shinnston led 2-0 after one inning and plated seven runs in the second to grab a 9-0 lead. Madison scored two in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Madison was scheduled to play Bridgeport on Monday in one of the four quarterfinals. St. Albans played Sophia, while Barboursville squared off with Ceredo-Kenova and Mountaineer battled with Shinnston.
The four winners are slated to meet in Tuesday’s semifinals at 6 and 8 p.m. The state championship game is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at South Charleston.
Pineville, the other District 2 representative, closed out state tourney play with an 0-2 record. Pineville lost 15-2 to Sophia on Saturday and was blown out by Barboursville on Sunday by a 12-1 score. Barboursville scored eight runs in the first inning and pounded out 12 hits in the rout.
The 9-10 state tourney began back on Friday with six games.
On Friday: Martinsburg beat Braxton County 18-7; Bridgeport won 14-3 over Mountaineer; Barboursville blanked Sophia 12-0; Shady Spring shut out Tucker County 13-0; St. Albans won 15-5 over C-K; and Shinnston was all over Grant County with a 17-2 win.
On Saturday: C-K routed Tucker County 16-0; St. Albans nipped Shady Spring 4-3; Bridgeport rolled over Braxton County 11-2 and Mountaineer doubled up on Martinsburg 10-5.
In Sunday’s games: C-K won 7-2 over Shady Spring; Mountaineer blasted Braxton County 23-0; Bridgeport blanked Martinsburg 14-0; and St. Albans hammered Tucker County 19-1.
