CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School volleyball team hopes to keep things headed in the right direction this season with a blended team of returning veterans and freshmen newcomers.

The season is scheduled to begin on Wednesday at Man High School with the Logan County Open as the Lady Tigers are scheduled to face county rivals Logan and Man.

Second-year coach Johnny Williamson’s team has four seniors on the roster in Hillary Hainer, Martha Ellis, Hailey Justice and Katie Lemmon.

Chapmanville’s juniors are Adrianna Lucas, Hannah Rakes and Savannah Wiley.

Hainer and Wiley give CRHS some height at the net.

The bulk of Chapmanville’s roster, however, are made up of freshmen and sophomores.

The 10th-grade players consist of: Hali Baldwin; Alyxandra Bush; Carly Cook, Katlyn Fletcher; and Abigail Marcum.

The remaining 10 players are freshmen. Those girls are: Haven Adkins; Summer Butcher; Siara Conley; Jada Freeman; Emily Hurst; Jessica Hurst; Taylor Killen; Katherine Muncey; Savannah Toney; and Emily Triplett.

“It’s looking good so far,” Coach Williamson said. “We only lost two seniors to graduation last year and I’ve got a lot of the girls coming back. There’s 23 right now on the roster. We’ve got a lot of depth and some of the freshman girls may end up contributing. I think we are much more athletic than we were last year. I can tell the difference now as opposed to last year at this point. By the end of the week we will find out where we are.”

Hainer and Justice were All-Cardinal Conference last year and will be two of the team’s leaders.

Coach Williamson said others have also stepped forward.

“The two that really came on last year were Abby Marcum and Ady Lucas. Both had never played volleyball before,” he said.

Chapmanville’s volleyball schedule is always tough with Cardinal Conference foes Wayne, Sissonville, Poca, Mingo Central, Tolsia, Scott and Herbert Hoover on the slate.

The Lady Tigers are also set to take on county foes Man and Logan as well as Class AAA Nitro this season. On Oct. 18, Chapmanville hosts its annual home tournament.
