The Appalachian Children’s Chorus (ACC) will hold auditions/open enrollment for its Logan County choir Sunday, August 26, at 3 p.m. at the West Logan Church of God on Second Avenue in Logan. This choir, known as the Cantare choir, will begin its fifth season at the end of this month.
Because of diminishing music programs in school, the Cantare choir has been able to allow children a place to learn music and to build on their love of singing. This year, Cantare had the amazing opportunity to perform with Logan’s own, Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. during his March concert at the Clay Center. For some, it was the first time they ever had been on the Clay Center stage. They have performed at the tree lighting ceremony, Joyful Night, which takes place every December at the W.Va. State Capitol. They also participated in ACC’s national children’s choir festival, the Appalachian Festival of Young Voices. So excited about this opportunity, the families of the choir raised enough money so the children could have the full experience of the festival just like the out-of-state guest choirs have.
This choir has become a family supporting each other at local performances such as “Winnie the Pooh” and going so far as to create their own Facebook page where they have been keeping up with each other over the summer.
Director Lisa Anderson will start her second season with the group. She and choir assistant, Amanda Havis, have done a tremendous job building the choir and promoting the family atmosphere, a trait common for most of the ACC choirs. Both ladies admit their own excitement for the new season and getting back together with the children.
“I can’t wait to get back to my ACC choir. I am so excited about the music we will be singing this season,” said Anderson, who is also a teacher at Man Middle School.
Auditions are a friendly, positive experience for the children. A child will sing for the director just to give her the idea of what pitch he or she can sing. If the audition date is not convenient, you may contact Lisa Anderson at 304-784-8421 to arrange an alternate date.
