MIDDLEBURG — The body of a man who went missing from a local skilled nursing facility was found under the Middleburg Bridge early Tuesday morning.
Paramedics, EMTs, police and firefighters had been searching the Guyandotte River for the body of Charles David Milum, 56, of Rum Creek.
Milum was reportedly the victim of a violent crime recently and had been placed in the Logan Center at Three Mile Curve when he had not fully recovered.
The beating is still under investigation by the West Virginia State Police. Sgt. J.C. Dotson said the case is currently being investigated by Trooper Harris and that police have identified suspects in the beating. He said any further action will be taken by Logan County Prosecutor John Bennett.
Milum went missing from Logan Center around 10:45 p.m. Monday.
When it was discovered that Milum was missing, the home called 911.
"We got a call about a missing person and I had my deputies out looking for the individual all night long," Logan County Sheriff Eddie Hunter said Tuesday.
Logan County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Sonya Porter said the missing person report came in from the skilled nursing facility and Cpl. N.M. Booth and Deputy J.N. Sheppard made a quick surveillance of the area. The deputies continued searching through the night for Milum.
Porter said a Logan city worker discovered the body early Tuesday morning in the Guyandotte River and called Chief E.K. Harper, who called Deputy F.M. Ferrell and Cpl. B.D. Cobb. The two deputies then called in the Logan Emergency Ambulance Service Authority's Swift Water Rescue team.
Porter said a boat was used to travel up the river to get to Milum’s body and it was recovered at 9:30 a.m. Milum’s body, she said, was found three miles from the skilled nursing home.
Porter said the investigation is ongoing. Porter said the body is currently undergoing an autopsy at the Medical Examiner’s office in Charleston and the outcome of that report will determine what steps the sheriff’s department takes next. She said homicide charges have not been ruled out in Milum’s death.
She said the Logan County Sheriff’s Department contacted the West Virginia State Police to let them know their victim had died.
Logan County Sheriff’s deputies, West Virginia State Police troopers and the Logan Police Department were on hand to assist LEASA. The Logan Fire Department also helped recover the body.
Traffic across the bridge was closed off by law enforcement officers while crews brought up the riverbank to an awaiting ambulance.
Family members confirmed the identity of the body was Milum.
