CHARLESTON — A march aimed at protecting historic Blair Mountain will kick off with a folk music concert featuring Grammy winner Tim O’Brien.

The June 5 concert at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston doubles as a tribute to the late Hazel Dickens, who was originally scheduled to perform.

It’s sponsored by Music Saves Mountains, a campaign to stop mountaintop removal coal mining.

Friends of Blair Mountain is organizing a five-day, 50-mile march to Blair Mountain from June 6-11.

It commemorates the 90th anniversary of the 1921 armed uprising by organizing coal miners that eventually required the intervention of federal troops.

Blair Mountain was briefly added to the National Register of Historic Places, then removed when landowners complained. Lawsuits to restore its status are ongoing.
