LOGAN (AP) — Federal officials say a state reclamation contract worker died from a heat-related illness while cleaning up an abandoned coal-mine site just outside Logan.

Albert Caleb Kiser of Mount Nebo died after he collapsed Thursday while cutting down a tree. He was 25.

The Charleston Gazette reports that Kiser worked for Eastern Arrow Corp. The company was reclaiming the Sugar Branch Burning Refuse Pile for the state Department of Environmental Protection’s abandoned mine lands program.

Why was this young man allowed to die cleaning up a mess that a coal company left behind? No one has said how he died. Was he given proper training? I will bet he was a part time worker and his death could have been prevented. The coal company makes billions, the employees are paid thousands and the tax payer of the United States pays for the clean up and this Mr.Kiser was paid a small amount for the job and paid with his life. I will also bet he had no health insurance and probably had no money for burial. Nice system we have isn't it?
