MCCONNELL (AP) — The Department of Environmental Protection has hired a contractor to extinguish an underground mine refuse fire in Logan County.

WSAZ-TV says Eastern Arrow Corp. has 90 days to extinguish the fire burning several feet underground near McConnell.

McConnell resident Charlotte Chapman says a strong sulfur smell from the fire is pulled into her house by the air conditioning or heating unit. Ashes occasionally fall on McConnell, making it difficult to be outside.

Chapman says residents hope the fire will be put out quickly
