Timmy Rein had a good season at the plate and in the classroom.

The former Logan High School baseball standout was one of 79 University of Charleston student-athletes to be named to the WVIAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which was announced late last week.

Rein, a junior third baseman and business administration major, hit .276 for the Golden Eagles this season with two doubles, 12 RBI and five stolen bases in 24 games played.

UC finished the season 28-23 overall and 19-14 in the conference. It was the second-best baseball season in UC history.

Charleston ran out to a quick 11-3 start in their spring campaign and finished five games over .500 with the No. 2 seed in the WVIAC Southern Division in the conference tournament. The WVIAC Tournament appearance was the first for the University of Charleston since the 2004 season.

A total of 564 athletes from the WVIAC member schools were selected to the 2011-12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Qualifying student-athletes are classified as a junior or senior and have obtained a 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale at the end of the term of attendance in which the sport was concluded.

Two-time 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-American winner Deborah Amos (Parkersburg, W.Va.) represented the Golden Eagles as the University of Charleston female scholar athlete of the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA, while men’s basketball player Austin Lewis (Winfield, W.Va.) was selected the male scholar athlete of the year as he also registered a perfect 4.0 in the classroom.

As a program the Golden Eagles had the second-most academic award winners behind Seton Hill’s 82. SHU, however, sponsors 20 sports compared to the University of Charleston’s 15.
