CHAPMANVILLE — Chapmanville Regional High School golfer Zac Gresham is currently ranked 10th in the 16-and-under age group on the West Virginia Top Flight Junior Golf Tour, with consists of approximately 100 golfers.
Gresham, a junior to be at CRHS, is competing in his second year in the Top Flight tour.
In 2008, he finished 29th in the same age group. His best finish to date is fourth at the 6,200-yard Green Hills Country Club in Ravens-wood. He shot 79, five strokes behind the winner.
At tournaments at Canaan Valley and Moundsville, he finished fifth and at Olgebay he was 10th.
Gresham’s scoring average is 79.5 over the five tournaments he has competed in this year.
At the high school level in 2008, Gresham led his team to both the Class AA State Tournament and the Cardinal Conference Championships. He shot 76 at the Big Bend Golf Course to capture second place in the regional tournament. He was named to both the All-Cardinal Conference and Double A All-State teams.
The Junior tour consist of 17 tournaments around West Virginia from Morgantown to Wheeling to Charleston. The tour operated by representatives Calloway Golf and the West Virginia Golf Association. Players come from West Virginia as well as surrounding states to compete. Players are limited to 10 tournaments per year. Players are awarded points on where they finish in each tournament and the 24 players with the most points earn a chance to compete in the year end Tour Championship at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs on July 30.
With eight more tournaments remaining, it appears that Gresham’s chances look pretty good to qualify for the championship. Gresham will also play in two AJGA tournaments (American Junior Golf Association) at the Virginian in Bristol, Tenn., in late July and at the Greenbrier Resort in early September.
Several other local players are also competing on this year’s tour. They include: Samuel Corns and Chase Preston of Logan; Harry Howell, Corey Justice, Shane Light and Alex Boggs of Madison; and Kevin Brown of Man.
