A local woman accused of kidnapping two children was returned to Logan County and indicted on earlier robbery charges by local law enforcement authorities.

Kathy Jo Mitchell, 29, of Logan, was arrested in Logan County by West Virginia State Police Trooper J.K. Harris for robbery, conspiracy, kidnapping and concealing a child on Feb. 19.

According to police reports, on Feb. 7, Mitchell allegedly concealed and removed a minor child from the legal custodian in violation of a court order and took the two minor children to Arkansas.

"This act was in violation of a family court order which entrusted custody of the children with their grandmother," the report states. "Kathy Jo Mitchell was detained by the Brinkley, Arkansas, Police Department on the aforementioned date with the two children in her possession. The accused took the children without the consent of the legal guardian."

An attachment was filed against Mitchell, also known as Kathy Jo Podunavac, in Logan County Circuit Court stating she was indicted by the grand jury.

Documents obtained said the grand jury indicted Mitchell and David A. Gullett with robbery in the second degree for placing a victim in "fear of bodily injury," for allegedly threatening that bodily harm would come to the victim with presentation of a weapon if the victim did not turn over the currency in the cash register of the West Logan Speedway, and did steal, take and carry away US currency in the amount of $484.21 and one 20-ounce Cherry Coke of a value of $1.47" on Sept. 10, 2007.

The indictment alleges that Mitchell and Gullett allegedly committed conspiracy to commit a crime in the incident.

On Feb. 9, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Robert Ilderton advised the court that Mitchell had violated her bond by absconding from the state of West Virginia and heading to Arkansas.

Logan Circuit Judge Eric O'Briant ordered her to be returned to West Virginia.

She was booked at the regional jail at 10:40 p.m.

Michelle Ann Vance, 41, of Stollings, was arrested in Logan County, by WVSP Trooper L.D. Hensley for forgery, uttering, fraudulent schemes and identity theft on Feb. 16.

According to police reports, on Feb. 2, Hensley was advised by a local doctor that Vance was allegedly writing counter checks and using the doctor’s name and business to obtain money at several locations.

"During the course of the investigation, this officer found that the accused also had stolen regular checks while employed (by the doctor), and was writing and uttering them with (the victim's) name on them. It was determined at the time of this complaint that the accused had passed 36 checks while using (the doctor’s) name. The total dollar amount obtained from these checks was $1,000."

Mitchell was booked at the regional jail at 4:45 p.m. on $25,000 bond.
