A local shooting organization has more organized matches on the way for local marksmen and women who wish to compete in different disciplines.

James Morrison of the Coalfield Shooters Association said that there are upcoming matches that will be offering something for people interested in different types of shooting events.

On May 5 the CSA hosted an IDPA styled practical shooting event where shooters will use real life Concealed Carry holsters and gear and draw from concealment.

A shooting match set for May 20th will be a shotgun skeet shooting style match with

clay throwers and marksmen firing from different stations.

On June 2, an IPSC style tactical action shooting match will be featured.

“Details are still being worked out, but this will be a more lengthy course than the last action match,” Morrison said.

Since its formation the CSA has been hosting local organized shooting events at the Earl Ray Tomblin Industrial Park off Gaston Caperton Drive.

CSA held its second match on Sunday, April 22 with a total of nine competitors shooting in a shot the rifle match. At various times throughout the day, spectators came by to check out the action, and many enjoyed the hotdogs and hamburgers provided by the club’s Vice President, Joshua Muncy, and his wife, Takara.

The course of fire was open to any rifle of any caliber and started with the shooter engaging a steel plate at a distance of 65 yards.

Next, the shooter moved to a shooters box located at 50 yards and engaged two paper targets (five rounds each) and three additional steel targets. Finally, the shooter moved to the last shooters box between 40 and 50 yards to engage two more paper targets (five rounds each) and the stop plate. The scores are a hit factor arrived at by dividing the total points by the number of seconds it took to complete the course. This type of scoring is common in action shooting, rewarding speed and accuracy together.

The Coalfield Shooters’ Association holds matches on the first Saturday of the month and the third Sunday. Matches are the only time the private range is open to the public, and membership is not required to compete.

“Women and children are more than welcome, too; this is a place you can bring the whole family; we can safely accommodate new and youth shooters while still allowing them to compete and have fun,” Morrison said.
