It was a fitting end for Logan High School senior Stevie Browning.

Browning closed out his stellar prep career in grand fashion on Friday night as he was named the Most Valuable Player in the South All-Star team’s 104-101 win over the North in the annual North-South Game at the South Charleston Community Center.

Browning, a 6-foot-3 guard who is headed to play at Fairmont State University, recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The South got revenge for last year’s 105-86 rout at the hands of the North and extended its lead to 24-6 in the all-time series, which resumed in 1983. The North had won twice in the last three years.

The South built a 59-49 lead at the half and pulled away late to notch the win.

Browning was 7-of-8 from the free throw line and tallied 11 out of his 19 points in the second half. He was 6-for-13 from the floor and also handed out an assist.

Browning had plenty of help from his South teammates.

Cameron Shannon of Beckley had 19 points for the game, while 6-9 Mason Park of Class AA state champion Tug Valley had 14 points. Pack was 5-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line in addition to grabbing five rebounds and dishing out two assists.

Taylor Smith of Wyoming East finished with 13 points. Ot Elmore of South Charleston had 12 points on four 3-point makes. Jacob Copley of Tolsia grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.

Q.J. Peterson of the Class AAA’s surprise state champion of 2012, Hedgesville, led the North All-Stars with 23 points and three assists. He was named as his team’s MVP of the game. Peterson, standing only 5-10, also did his best Spud Webb impersonation by winning the slam dunk competition. He won it over North teammate Boo Lathon of Wheeling Park, this year’s state player of the year.

The North had one other player reach double figures in scoring in 6-8 Robbie Smelser of Hampshire, who had 12 points. Van Jones of Fairmont had 11 rebounds.

Man High School’s Jordan Simpson, the captain of the Class A all-state basketball team, had originally been selected to play in the North-South Game but pulled out. He is headed to play collegiate baseball at West Virginia State.

* In Thursday’s North-South All-Star softball tripleheader at Buffalo, the South won Game 1, 4-1. The North took the second game, 12-2. The South then took the series by winning the third game, 6-2.

Chapmanville Regional High School twin sisters Allison and Jenna Evans played for the South. They are headed to play at the University of Charleston this fall.

Allison Evans had an RBI in the first game.

The North was 10-for-40 from 3-point land for the game. The South was 9-for-29.

The rebounding edge went to the North, 62-58.
