VIENNA — Logan High School’s Rachelle Toppings and Katie Chryssofos were honored on Thursday evening at Vienna as the Lady Cats’ players were named to the Class AAA all-state tournament team.

Logan finished the state tourney in third place with a 1-2 record.

The Lady Cats lost 8-3 to Parkersburg South in the opener, then came back on Wednesday night to beat Robert C. Byrd, 8-0. Logan was then ousted from the double-elimination tourney on Thursday morning with a 6-0 defeat to Parkersburg South.

Chryssofos, a senior catcher for the Lady Cats, was 3-for-9 at the plate in the three games with a three-run homer and a double. Her three-run shot was in Logan’s opening loss to Parkersburg South and accounted for the only runs of the game for the Lady Cats. She also made two fine defensive plays in Thursday’s game with the Patriots.

Toppings, a junior shortstop and first-year starter, went 4-for-11 at the plate to lead Logan’s bats. Her four hits were the most on the team in state tournament play.

Logan, which finished the season 28-7 and played in its fourth straight state tourney, was also the winner of the Sportsmanship Award.

Named to the Class AAA all-tournament team from state champion John Marshall were Kristin Lewicki, Megan Garcia, Alexa Jones and Kylie Howard.

John Marshall defeated Parkersburg South 11-6 in the Class AAA state championship game. South had forced a winner-take-all final with a 12-5 rout over the Monarchs in action earlier in the day on Thursday.

John Marshall finished with a 35-4 record, while Parkersburg South was 26-14.

South’s all-tourney representatives were CeCe Bailey, Gena Grippett and Katelyn Hamilton.

Ashley Bassel of RCB also made it to the all-tourney squad.

In the Class AA state tourney, Wayne battled back from the loser’s bracket to win three games on Thursday to take the Double-A state crown.

Wayne beat Keyser 9-1 on Thursday morning, then knocked off defending state champion Ritchie County 4-3 and 3-0 to win the school’s first-ever state championship.

Wayne (30-6) landed four players on the all-state tourney team — Jessica Watts, Elizabeth Parsons, Jessica Rowe and Tasha Maynard. Rowe fired a complete-game one-hit shutout in the championship game. She also had two hits in the first game against Ritchie.

For Ritchie County (28-7), Allison Delancey, Cassidy Ray and Kelsey Waggoner were named all-tournament.

Keyser, which went 1-2 in the state tourney and finished 25-11, were led by its all-tourney picks Taylor Haggerty and Meghan Anderson.

Shady Spring which went 0-2 at state, had one all-tourney selection in Michelle Snodgrass. Shady also won the Sportsmanship Award.

In the Class A division, Buffalo won back-to-back state titles with a 6-3 victory over Moorefield on Thursday. The Bison (32-7) landed four players on the all-tourney team — Chelsey Parkins, Katie Higginbotham, Ali Burdette and Leslie Harris.

Runner-up Moorefield (34-6) had four make it with Danica Rogers, Michaela Regester, Jayme Fraley and Katelyn Wills.

The all-state picks from St. Marys were Bethani Chambers and Amy Childers.

Moorefield won the Class A Sportsmanship Award.
