MAN — Man High School has announced its newest class in its athletics hall of fame.

The Class of 2012, including: Donald Standifur; Harlan Carter; Barney Warren Frazier; Ricky Gibson; Robert Lewis II; Larry “Two” Harvey; and Jason Collins will be honored Sept. 6-7 during the Man Hall of Fame Weekend.

There will be a golf outing on Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Triadelphia Country Club in Man. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Then at 6 p.m., there will be a meet and greet at 6 p.m. at the Man Memorial Field House before the 7 p.m. dinner and speeches.

The Hall of Fame class will also be recognized on Sept. 7 at the Man-Westside Hall of Fame Game at 7:30 p.m. There will be a hospitality tent for members and guests at the East End Zone.

Donald Standifur

Man High School Class of 1952

Donald “Peco” Standifur is a 1952 graduate of Man High School where he was a three-sport letterman playing football, basketball and baseball.

After graduation, Peco joined the workforce and worked in the coal industry in Logan County until 1990.

He married Loretta Dillon in 1959. Lou was a Logan Co. elementary school teacher for 38 years.

The couple has three children: Kimberly, a pharmacy-tech; Kevin, a Virginia Tech grad who has degrees in electrical engineering and currently works for AEP; and Kerry, who was born with spina bifida, has overcome many challenges and has received a degree in communications.

Throughout his life Donald has been a strong supporter of Hillbilly Athletics through working and coaching Buddy League and Midget League support programs.

Peco is retired and lives at Accoville with Lou and Kerry. He is a familiar sight to those who travel Buffalo Creek and walks to keep his good health.

Dr. Horlin “Boonie” Carter, Dr.

Man High School Class of 1961

Horlin “Boonie” Carter is a 1961 graduate of Man High School where he excelled in football and baseball. He was WV All-State Baseball in both 1960 and 1961, Honorable mention, WV All-State Football in 1960.

After graduation he joined the United States Air Force 1961-65, then attended Marshall University and garnered second-team All Mid-American conference baseball in 1967 and 1968.

Horlin received his teaching degree, returned to Logan Co., taught for a year and established Logan County’s first Special Olympics event with other coaches, teachers and volunteers, then taught and coached baseball in Cabell County.

He continued in education at the College level at Illinois State University, 1972-77, North Carolina A&T State University, 1977-84, Indiana State University, 1984-86 and was a Supervisor Education Specialist at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., 1986-94. He is currently a Professor of Environmental Health & Safety, School of Technology at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C.

His love and duty to our country has made him a USAF-Air National Guard and USAF Reserve from 1978-2003.

Horlin, “Boonie”, was born and raised in Lundale, the son of a coal miner and homemaker, the late Cecil and Ophelia Carter. He lives in Greensboro, N.C. with his wife, Maxine. They have four children — Dorina McCombs, Glen Foster, Horlin Carter, Jr., and Tracy Carter — who have given them nine beautiful grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He and Maxine are active members of Genesis Baptist Church and a past chairperson of the Board of Trustees.

Barney Warren Frazier, Jr.

Man High School Class of 1967

A 1967 Man graduate, Barney Warren Frazier played basketball and baseball for the Hillbillies.

After graduation, Barney attended the Logan Branch (campus) of Marshall University, the forerunner of what is now SWVCTC, on a National Honor Society Scholarship, were he played basketball for two years for the “Branch.” He continued his education at Marshall’s main campus and received a degree in education.

He taught for the next eight years, worked for four years for Monterey Coal Company until it closed down. He then moved to Columbus, Ohio and entered Capital University Law School, and received his law degree in 1987.

Since that time, Barney has worked with the law firm of Kay Casto & Chaney in Charleston, where he has been a partner in the firm since 1992.

He is listed as one of the best lawyers in America, WV’s Best Lawyers, and the first-Tier Law Firms by U.S. News and World Report.

Barney lives in Charleston and is married to Jackie Scaggs, a 1970 MHS graduate and the proud parents of two children, Warren Joshua Frazier and Margaret Hooper, who have given them three wonderful grandsons.

He divides his life between his work, family, and attending sporting events, continuing to support the Man High School Hillbillies by attending as many football, basketball, and baseball games that he can.

Ricky Gibson

Man High School Class of 1974

Ricky Gibson was a 1974 graduate of Man High School. He played and excelled in football, basketball and baseball at Man High School. He was honored as a WV All-State Baseball player and was Captain of Defense for the Hillbillies his senior year.

After graduation, he went to work in the coal mines as an electrician and found employment with several mining companies through his career. He also maintained a love of sports and often played basketball and baseball with high school friends on the weekend. Throughout his life, Ricky was extremely outgoing and never met a stranger.

He was married to the love of his life, Tammy Corns, in 1977. They lived in Mineral City, W.Va., and had two children, Eric, and Ashlee Maddy. Although he often worked long hours, Ricky was a devoted father and husband. He also enjoyed spending time with his five siblings and their families—he loved family reunions and other family celebrations.

Ricky passed away in December, 2000, at the age of 44.

Robert Lewis, II

Man High School Class of 1991

A 1991 graduate of Man High School, Robert Lewis played football and was on the power lifting team.

He received WV All-State Football Honorable Mention, Player of the Week Honorable Mention, and in power lifting—NASA teenage National Champion, USPF teenage WV State Champion, USPF teenage National Champion, USPF Bench Press Champion, USPF Power lifting Squat Record, 165-pound weight class.

After graduation, Bob attend WVU, obtained a BA in Biology & Chemistry and a Doctorate in Medicine in Neurology and Neurophysiology.

He joined a multispecialty group and currently practices at Pleasant Valley Hospital in Teays Valley.

A highlight of his career came in 2011 when he was invited to Ethiopia with the People to People Organization where he offered education and medical services to the many people and physicians of Addis Ababa and Amanuel in Ethiopia.

Bob and his wife, Cindy, live in Hurricane and have two children, Enzo, age 10 and Emma, age 6.

Youth sports and family are his life, as he continues to coach football, baseball, softball and wrestling as active sponsors of local youth sports. He and his family ride actively in the WV hills and his wife is very involved in the local school system.

Larry James “Two” Harvey

Man High School Class of 1993

Larry “Two” Harvey is a 1993 graduate of Man High School where he played football and did weightlifting for the Hillbillies.

He was an honor graduate of Man High, a three-year letterman in football, where he was named Class AAA All-State in 1993, Tri-State Elite Eleven Team (Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky), nominated McDonald’s Player of the Week 1991 and 1992, Iron Man of the Week, and Man High Weightlifting Record Holder (19 years) for dead lift at the defensive tackle position.

After graduation, “Two” attended Marshall University, where he was a member of the Southern Conference Championship and National Runner-up Thundering Herd Football team.

Larry transferred to Glenville State College in 1995 where he was a member of the WVIAC Championship Pioneer football team from 1995-97.

In 1997, he led the WVIAC with 13 quarterback sacks, won the GSC Pioneer Lunch Pail Ward for his hard work and dedication to football team and was named to the 1996-97 WVIAC All-Conference Team.

He received a degree in Behavioral Science and worked with the WV Regional Jail Authority as a Corrections Officer before continuing his career as a Natural Resource Police Officer with the Division of Natural Resources.

Larry is married to Kim Maynard Harvey and lives in South Man. They are the parents of two sons — Chase, a seventh-grade student at Man Middle, and Gage, a sophomore at Man High School.

Since 1998, “Two” has volunteered his time coaching football and baseball to the youth in the Man area.

Jason Collins

Man High School Class of 1998

As a 1998 graduate of Man High School, Jason Collins was a member of the Hillbilly basketball team and was on the WV First-Team All-State Basketball Team.

He attended Alice Lloyd College after high school where he was All-Conference Basketball for his alma mater. He was awarded the honor of Freshman of the Year, was named Tennessee Valley Athletic All-Conference and was MVP his sophomore and senior years and Honorable Mention All-American his senior year.

After college Jason moved to Auburn, Ala., and worked for the Waid Home center for five years before working for Builders First Source in Sales.

He and his wife, Holli, have two children — Jason Matthew, 2, and Emma Katherine, 6 months. They attend Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn.
