MAN — The Man High School football team is looking north to Wheeling.

With last Friday night’s 25-20 victory at home over the Parkersburg Catholic Crusaders in a Class A first-round playoff game, the Hillbillies are just one win away from the semifinals and two wins away from reaching the state finals.

Man, the Class AA state runner-ups in 1977, 1980 and 1984, are hoping to reach the Dec. 4 Class A state championship game at Wheeling Island Stadium.

No. 2-seeded Man (10-1), however, has a major obstacle in its way.

The Billies are scheduled to host No. 7 Fayetteville (9-2) on Friday night at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Field in a quarterfinal matchup.

Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Pirates advanced with a 23-20 victory last Friday night over Wahama.

Fayetteville and Man, of course, are no strangers to each other.

The Billies and the Pirates have played a yearly series and met earlier in the season at Fayetteville as Man walked away with a 23-7 victory.

A win over Fayetteville would put Man into the Final Four round Nov. 27-28 over Thanksgiving Weekend. The Billies would play either No. 3 Richwood or No. 6 Wirt County. Richwood and Wirt are set to play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Richwood High School.

Man was led by running back Brandon Plymale in the Parkersburg Catholic game. Plymale had 18 carries for 136 yards and one touchdown. Andrew Hale was the Billies’ spark as he had 13 carries for 119 yards and a score.

In another Class A quarterfinal, No. 1 Madonna hosts No. 9 Tucker County on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Weirton. Madonna advanced with an easy 48-6 win over No. 16 Gilbert.

No. 4 Williamstown, the defending Class A state champ, hosts No. 5 Wheeling Central on Friday night in the other Round of Eight game.

In the Class AA quarterfinals: No. 8 Ravenswood plays at No. 1 on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.; No. 4 Frankfort hosts No. 12 Pikeview on Friday night; No. 2 Magnolia hosts No. 7 Keyser on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.; and No. 6 Bluefield plays at No. 3 Sherman on Friday night.

In the Class AAA quarterfinals: No. 9 Ripley plays at No. 1 Brooke on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.; No. 5 Fairmont plays No. 13 University on Friday night at East-West Stadium; No. 2 South Charleston plays No. 7 Martinsburg on Friday night at Charleston’s Laidley Field; and No. 3 Bridgeport hosts No. 6 George Washington on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
