MAN – The Man High School football team put the Mount View Golden Knights to bed early on Friday night as the Hillbillies scored a convincing 63-0 rout in their home opener at George A. Queen Memorial Field to improve to 1-1 on the young season.

Billies junior quarterback Shane Browning ran for three touchdowns and tossed another to Cody Owens and senior Derek Lomax rushed for 100 yards and two TD’s to lead Man’s explosive offense in the annual Hall of Fame Game.

Man’s defense was also dominant as seniors Zack Underwood, Blake Adkins, Shane Almodovar and Josh Parsons helped preserve the shutout.

The Billies were able to bounce back from last week’s season-opening 55-18 loss at 3A county rival Logan.

Man head coach Harvey Arms was able to let everyone play in game.

“We played great,” Arms said. “It was a great effort. Our execution was better. Everything was done better. Now we start on Monday getting better than we are today.”

The Billies jumped all over the Golden Knights by scoring on their first drive, marching 63 yards on just six plays capped off by a Lomax 6-yard sprint to pay dirt. Shane Almodovar’s extra point kick failed as the Billies took a 6-0 lead with 9:20 left in the first quarter.

Man then held the Knights on their first possession and then pushed the lead to 12-0 on a 33-yard TD run by Browning on Man’s next possession. Man’s PAT pass failed but MHS led 12-0 at the 4:22 mark of the opening period of play.

Man’s defense held the Knights in check again to start the second quarter of play and took over the pigskin at its own 46-yard line. Eight plays later, fullback Jimmy Duba bulled in for a 3-yard score. Lomax ran in the two-point conversion and the onslaught was on as Man took a commanding 20-0 advantage with 10:08 left to play in the first half.

The Billies defense then forced a bad snap and Man cashed it in for yet another score as Browning scored his second of three touchdowns on a 3-yard TD run on a busted play. Lomax added the conversion run to give MHS 28-0 lead with 7:25 to play.

Once again, the Billies defense was too much for the Golden Knights as they forced yet another bad snap on a punt, giving the Man offense great field position at the MVHS 21-yard stripe.

After a holding call on the Billies, Browing scored his third touchdown of the game on a 27-yard run with 4:01 to go until halftime. Almodovar’s kick failed, leaving the score at 34-0.

Man added another score just before the intermisson as Browning hooked up with Owens on a 35-yard touchdown pass with just 16 seconds on on the clock as Man took a 42-0 lead into the locker room.

Man’s offense and defense picked up where they left off, dominating both sides of the ball. Man pushed the lead to 49-0 on Lomax’s second touchdown of the game with 6:39 left in the third period.

Coach Arms then elected to take the starters out and play all of his reserves the remainder of the game.

The Billies’ final two scores came on freshman Michael Belcher’s 6-yard run to make it 56-0 with 3:44 left in the third.

Man added its final touchdown of the game when freshman QB Caycee Mullins tossed a 26-yard strike to freshman Tracy Jones with 3:13 remaining in the game as the Billies crushed the Golden Knights 63-0.

The Billies rolled up 352 yards of total offense, including 253 on the ground and another 99 in the air. The Man defense held the Knights to minus-2 yards of total offense.

Man is scheduled to return to action this Friday night as the Billies host Westside (1-1). Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
