CHAPMANVILLE — It was a nice way to close out the regular season for the Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team on Tuesday night.

The Tigers won 74-47 over county rival Man at Chapmanville’s Danny Godby Gymnasium and are 13-9 ahead of the upcoming Class AA sectional tournament.

It was also Senior Night as Chapmanville honored its two 12th-grade players — Mackenzie Martin and Mikie Hurst.

Martin led the way for the Tigers with a 35-point effort.

The all-state Martin, the leading scorer in the Cardinal Conference, was honored prior to the game for reaching 1,500 career points and becoming Chapmanville’s all-time leading scorer.

Kenny Plumley had 10 points, Hurst nine, Joe Tackett seven, Trey Dalton six, Brady Cox four and Zac Casto with three points.

Man, which closed out the regular season at 6-16, was led by freshman John Thomas Keffer who had 16 points. Gage Harvey had 10 points, while Kenny Joe Adkins had eight, Clay Brumfield six, Robert Caudill and Jake Adkins had three each and Cayce Mullins has two.

Chapmanville closed out the regular season with four wins. The Tigers, which beat Man three times this season, have won five out of their last six games.

Man led 2-0 and 5-3 early on before Martin tied it 5-5 after an inside bucket at the 5:25 mark of the first quarter.

Chapmanville went ahead 13-8 after a pair of 3-pointers by Dalton.

The Tigers led 15-11 after one quarter when Plumley scored with three seconds left.

Man then tied it in the second quarter at 15 after buckets by Kenny Joe Adkins and Harvey.

Chapmanville then took the lead for good with back-to-back 3-pointers by Hurst and Martin which made it 21-15 at the 5:55 mark, forcing Man coach Harvey Arms to call timeout.

Man pulled to within 22-20 as Adkins nailed a 3-pointer.

The Tigers countered with a mini 6-0 run to make it 28-22 after three free throws by Martin and a Martin trey from the corner.

Tackett then put Chapmanville ahead 31-22 with a 3-pointer from the corner at the 1:25 mark.

The Tigers led 31-24 at the half and then coasted to victory.

Chapmanville, coached by first-year mentor Allan Hatcher, is scheduled to return to action on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. with the Class AA Region 4 Section 2 play-in game against Wayne at Logan High School’s Willie Akers Arena. Chapmanville has the fourth seed, while Wayne is No. 5.

Chapmanville has beaten the Pioneers twice this season by wide margins. The Tigers won 52-29 at home on Jan. 18, then later went to Wayne on Feb. 15 and prevailed 64-40.

If the favored Tigers beat the Pioneers, Chapmanville would then move on to the Class AA sectional semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Logan where the Tigers would face off with No. 1 seed and Class AA No. 9-ranked Tolsia (14-8) at 6 p.m.

Chapmanville just went to Tolsia on Monday night and upset the Rebels 45-43. The Tigers split with Tolsia this season, also losing 52-41 on Feb. 8 at home. The Rebels were crowned as the regular season Cardinal Conference champions.

The other Class AA sectional semifinal next Thursday at 8 p.m. pits No. 3 seed Mingo Central (13-9) and No. 2 seed Scott (13-9).

If was first believed Mingo Central would get the No. 1 seed.

The Miners (6-2) had a better record against sectional teams this season than both the Rebels (5-3) and the Skyhawks (5-3) but coaches were asked to submit their ballots on Monday before noon. Later that night, Chapmanville went to Tolsia and defeated the Rebels and Mingo Central went on to beat Wayne on Tuesday night to improve to 6-2 in the section.

The two sectional semifinal winners then move on to play in the championship game on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Logan.

Both the section winner and runner-up will advance to play in the regional tournament.
