Mark Hatcher had few words to say about Monday night’s 65-46 loss at home to Westside.

The Logan High School boys’ basketball team led only briefly against the Renegades, which led 14-6 after the first quarter, 28-21 at the half and 43-33 after three.

No. 6-ranked Westside played a 3-2 matchup zone the whole night against No. 5 Logan.

It seemed to slow down the Wildcats, which were never able to get into any kind of offensive rhythm or tempo.

With the loss, Logan dropped to 7-4 on the season.

The Wildcats have lost three out of their last four games and four out of their last six.

Logan had started the season 5-0 but have now gone 2-4 since.

“We just didn’t play very well tonight,” Hatcher said after the game. “They played well and shot the ball extremely well. I’m just real disappointed with the team right now. We’re not very good right now. We might have been for a couple of weeks but we’re just not very good now.”

Hatcher said Westside’s zone didn’t really make the difference.

“No, not really,” he said. “I just think that we didn’t play very good offensively. They played good defense. They don’t make a lot of mistakes and you don’t get a lot of second opportunities. You have to take care of the basketball and we didn’t do a very good job at that. We missed foul shots early and we missed some easy ones early. We put ourselves in a hole and when you do that against Westside a 10-point deficit is like a 20-point deficit to a lot of other schools.”

Logan and Westside have enjoyed an intense rivalry since the series began a few years ago.

It was Westside which the Wildcats beat 60-56 in the 2005 Class AA state championship game.

One Logan fan held up a sign which reminded the Renegade faithful of that day. It read, “Remember this? Logan 60, Westside 56.”

However, this would be Westside’s night.

The Renegades (8-3) saw four players reach double digits in scoring, led by Kyle Lusk, who netted 15 points.

Cody Toler had 14, Chris Blankenship 12 and Eric Bailey 11. Bailey hit three 3-pointers on the night.

Derek Adkins added five points and Marcus Gunter four, while Casey Newsome and Dustin Kenneda had two each.

Sophomore point guard Brantz O’Briant had 16 points as he drained three treys.

Jonathan Bevins, Logan’s 6-foot-7 sophomore center, was limited to 10 points.

Billy Tomblin had six, Peter Lowery five, Caleb Luther four and Brett Sorrell three. Chay Gregory and Greg Adams chipped in with one point each.

Westside only led 28-21 at the half but began to pull away.

Logan briefly was in it as O’Briant’s 3-pointer cut it to 32-28 with 3:40 to go.

But then Bailey hit a trey with 1:21 left to make it 41-30 Renegades.

Leading by a 43-33 score after three, the Renegades then put away the Wildcats.

Bailey’s 3 with 7:50 left in the game pushed Westside’s lead to 46-33 and got the Renegades off to a good start in the fourth period.

Two free throws by Lusk made it 50-34 with 6:05 remaining.

Logan only got to within 12 the rest of the way.

Gunter was able to sink a layup with 3:09 to go after Westside broke Logan’s press, pushing the Renegade lead to 57-41 and sealing the victory.

Logan tied the game at 17, 19 and 21 in the second quarter.

The Wildcats led 19-17 with 3:55 to go until the half after two makes from the foul line by Luther.

Logan led 2-0 and 3-2 early in the game.

LHS won last night’s JV game, 70-48, over Westside.

The Wildcats return to the hardwood tonight at No. 4-ranked Herbert Hoover.

Logan hosts Point Pleasant on Friday night.
