From time to time, we all hear people complaining about how there is nothing to do in Logan County.

That makes one wonder just where do these people live. There is usually a lot going on in Logan County and the month of October is a good example.

First, there will be Rocktoberfest ’09 at Chief Logan State Park.

This event is being promoted and hosted by local musicians and will be held on Saturday, from noon to 10 p.m. at the second shelter on the left.

There are a LOT of groups which are being booked for Rocktoberfest and at last count they included those in the following lineup:

• Apparitions 12-12:20

• Academy Drive 12:20-12:40

• This World Will Fall 12:40-1

• This Darkened Day 1:20-2

• Riverside Drive 2-2:20

• Days To Come 2:20-3

• Riverside Drive 3-3:20

• Meet Me In The Matinee 3:20-4

• Derek Bowen 4-4:20

• First Round Knockout 4:20-5

• Derek Bowen 5-5:20

• Foz 5:20-6

• Tim Browning 6-6:20

• Some Gave All 6:20-7

• Tim Browning 7-7:20

• Let The Guilty Hang 7:20-8

• Aaron Stone 8-8:30

• Ashes Of Serenity 8:30-9:30

If the event is successful (and honestly, given how much talent it boasts and given the nearby location it really should be), then we can possibly expect a Rocktoberfest next year, too. Here is your chance to enjoy a great music event being put on for you by your peers. Spread the word about Rocktberfest and show up and have a good time.

Speaking of Chief Logan State Park and fun things to do in October...

This is the time of the year when the Shawnee Trail Living History exhibit usually returns to the park, and you can experience life on the wild and wooly eastern Frontier when legends like Simon Girty, Simon Kenton, Chief John Logan and Daniel Boone were just men struggling to survive in the wilderness.

As usual, the Shawnee Trail will need dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to help out.

“We need people to help with the trail,” Jeannie Gore told me recently. “We will be signing up people on Thursday, Oct. 1, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the amphitheater in the park.”

The Shawnee Living History Trail will run October 7-11. For more information call 304-752-7044.

On October 7, 8 and 9, fourth grade students from across the area will be brought to the park to see what life was like when our area was a wild and wooly frontier.

As you may have heard, the good folks at The Aracoma Story Inc. have another Halloween chill planned this year. Last year’s “Trail of the Dead” was such a success that the folks at TAS have come up with another frightful venue for the fall season.

Another cast meeting is scheduled for “ The Dark —The Ultimate Haunted House Experience” for anyone interested in participating. The next meeting will be today at 6 p.m. at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheatre in Chief Logan State Park.

Anyone interested in being a part of the haunted attraction as an actor or volunteer should plan on showing up.

“We are in the process of constructing what promises to be one of the most frightening haunted house experiences to be found anywhere,” TAS’s Jim Frye said. Last year’s “Trail of the Dead” led groups of people up the hollow at the amphitheater for a night of thrills and chills. The TAS officials figured that in order to get the most people to enjoy this year’s event, it would be held at the backstage of the amphitheater, which will look like an old-fashioned, victorian-style Appalachian house.

Each of the rooms and hallways will be filled with terrifying stuff. Visitors will be challenged to walk throughout the house in small groups and experience what is waiting in the dark.

TAS folks involved with “The Dark” warn that those who are pregnant, suffer from claustrophobia, are prone to seizures or have heart or respiratory problems might want to avoid this Halloween scarefest as it is definitely not for the faint of heart! Due to the graphic nature and intensity of ‘The Dark,’ parental discretion is advised and all children age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

“The Dark…” will run Tuesdays through Sunday, beginning on Oct. 13-18, 20-25, 27-30 and Nov. 1.

The haunted attraction will not be open on Halloween Night.

It will be open each night from 7-11 p.m.

All tickets are $8 each and must be purchased at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater’s box office, which opens nightly at 6:30 p.m. Visa, MasterCard and Debit Cards are accepted. Group discounts are available for groups of 15 or more by calling The Aracoma Story, Inc. office at (304) 752-0253. For more information about ‘The Dark’ visit the TASI web site at www.thearacomastory.com.

With all that going on, no one should ever say there’s nothing to do in Logan County!
