According to a published report in the Charleston Gazette newspaper, former Logan High School basketball standout Paul Herbert Williamson has left the basketball program at the University of Charleston.

The report cited UC coach Mark Downey as the source of information.

Williamson, a 2011 LHS graduate and Harts native, had transferred to Division II Charleston from West Virginia University where he was a walk-on freshman last season for the NCAA Tournament-bound Mountaineers.

Williamson played four years at Logan and became the school’s all-time leading scorer. He helped lead the Wildcats to the 2010 Class AAA state championship and averaged 24.7 points per game his senior season in 2011.

Williamson scored nearly 2,000 points in his career at Logan but played sparingly as a walk-on last season at WVU. He cited the rigors of Division I college basketball travel as one of the reasons he left Morgantown. It is not known why he is leaving UC.

Last year for WVU, Williamson averaged around one point a game and appeared in 20 contests, making seven 3-point shots and scoring 92 total points.

His career high was seven points in a Nov. 17 blowout win over Alcorn State.
