Several locals jailed on theft-related charges

Area law enforcement officers have continued to rack up more burglary related arrests as the summer has turned to fall according to police reports.

• Daniel Ryan Smoot, 28, of Accoville was arrested by West Virginia State Police Trooper P.J. Dick and Sgt. Dave Walls of the Man Police Department for burglary, petit larceny, destruction of property, grand larceny and transferring and receiving stolen property on Oct. 3.

According to police reports, on Sept. 30, 2009, the officer received a call to the fourth street about a burglary.

"The accused, according to witness statements, entered the victim's residence around 2 p.m. The accused stated that he picked the lock with a credit card," the report states. "After entering the victim's residence, the accused admitted to stealing a Gateway laptop computer and a Kodak digital camera. The accused admitted to selling the laptop for $70 and the camera for $20 in US currency."

According to another criminal complaint, on Sept. 26, 2009, the officer received a complaint from the victim stating her home was broken into and $25 in cash was stolen along with a bottle of prescription medication.

"The door casing and door jamb on another door were destroyed in the incident," the report states. "On Oct. 2, this officer received a written statement from Daniel Smoot stating that he broke into (the victim's) residence and stole the (money) and prescription medication."

He was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 12:40 a.m.

• John Daniel Lawson, 28, of Lyburn, was arrested in Logan County by WVSP Trooper T.D. Boggs for burglary, destruction of property and petit larceny on Oct. 3.

According to police reports, on Oct. 3, at 12:15 a.m. the officer responded to a call about a burglary in progress to assist Tpr. J.D. Hensley.

"Upon arrival, the undersigned officer along with Tpr. Hensley were met by the victim who advised that his residence had been broken into and that there was blood in his lighter. Both officers noted blood on the lighter, blood on the refrigerator door and the broken glass from the side window. The undersigned officer then noticed the defendant, Josh Lawson, walking down WV County Route 10. The undersigned officer then noticed blood on the fingers of the defendant and blood on his white shirt along with his jeans. The defendant then denied breaking into the residence, but later admitted to the undersigned officer that he did commit the act."

He was booked at the regional jail at 5:45 a.m.

Over the course of the past few weeks, local police have made about 15 arrests for burglaries and robberies in Logan County.
