Strike the Huskies early and take Hoover and its fans out of the game.
It worked as the Class AA No. 10-ranked Tigers downed the Huskies 27-7 at Herbert Hoover High School’s Joe Eddie Conley Field in Falling Rock.
Chapmanville racked up three touchdowns on its first three possessions to take a 20-0 lead after the first quarter of play and took the three-score advantage into the locker room.
The Tigers then coasted in the second half as each team scored a touchdown.
Chapmanville won for the first time in three years over the Huskies, which took a wild 48-45 shootout at Tiger Stadium last season and also prevailed 30-20 two years ago at home.
Chapmanville improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Cardinal Conference with the league win. The Tigers have allowed just two touchdowns in their first two games and have outscored their opponents 74-14. Chapmanville opened the season last week with an impressive 47-7 win at home over Sissonville.
Herbert Hoover, playing its first conference game, remained winless at 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Cardinal.
The Tigers set the tone early against the Huskies, taking the opening kickoff and driving 65 yards in eight plays, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Cox. Max Spradlin’s extra point kick was wide right but Chapmanville was on top 6-0 with 9:14 to go in the first quarter.
The touchdown was set up by Dustin Smith’s 10-yard run, quarterback Brandon White’s 19-yard run and another 19-yard rush by Cox to the Hoover 6-yard line. Two plays later, the Tigers were in the end zone.
Then came the turning point, and possibly, the play of the game.
Chapmanville, surprisingly, attempted an on-side kick on the ensuing kickoff.
The Huskies were left completely off guard as Spradlin’s kick bounced to the ground and Chapmanville backup running back Jake Compton fell on the pigskin at the Hoover 34-yard line after a major rugby scrum.
Six plays later, Chapmanville was in the end zone again as Cox scored on a 10-yard touchdown run, stretching and diving across the goal line as he was tackled. White then ran in the two-point conversion as the Tigers led 14-0 with 5:55 to go in the first quarter.
Chapmanville’s second TD was set up by an 11-yard pass from White to Brady Cox to the Herbert Hoover 11-yard line.
The Tigers kicked the ball back off and the Huskies were finally able to run their first play from scrimmage with about five minutes to go in the opening quarter. However, five snaps later, on a third-and-14 play White intercepted Carter Coleman at the Tiger 46-yard line and the CRHS junior returned it 22 yard to the Hoover 32.
Chapmanville was in the end zone again just five plays later as Smith plunged in from 1 yard out. The Tigers’ conversion attempted failed but CRHS led 20-0 with 1:52 to go in the first quarter.
The key play of the drive was a 36-yard run by Tyler Cox to the 1-yard line.
Down by 20, Herbert Hoover looked to try to get something going just before the half.
The Huskies ended up turning the tables on the Tigers with a bit of trickery of their own as Joseph Forbes successfully executed a fake punt play, running for an 8-yard gain to the Tiger 46 on a fourth-and-three.
The Hoover drive, though, was snuffed out by the Chapmanville defense after a sack by Cox and an incomplete Coleman pass on a fourth-and-seven at the CRHS 26.
The Tigers got the ball back and appeared to be in business again as White fired a 72-yard touchdown pass to Cox. The score, though, was nullified after a pass interference penalty on Chapmanville. The Tigers then punted and the Huskies took over on their own 45-yard line with 3:43 left until halftime.
Coleman, who orchestrated last year’s thrilling win over the Tigers, got things going with completions of 22 and 8 yards to the CRHS 15-yard line.
But on the very next play, Joe Woody sacked Coleman for a 10-yard loss on a third-and-one back to the 24-yard line.
Hoover went for it on fourth-and-11 at the 24 but Coleman’s pass to Charlton Gandee fell incomplete near the goal line.
Chapmanville got the ball back and White took a knee to end the half.
The Huskies then scored on the opening drive of the third quarter on Coleman’s 13-yard TD pass to Forbes, cutting the deficit to 20-7.
The Tigers, though, put the game away with a 40-yard touchdown run by Tyler Cox with 6:54 left in the game. Cox finished the game with 143 yards rushing on 15 carries including the three touchdowns.
Smith finished with 16 carries for 88 yards.
Erik Siljeholm, a senior foreign exchange student from Stockholm, Sweden, had the most tackles for CRHS with six.
Woody had four tackles, two assists and two sacks.
Brandon Farley and Cox had four tackles each. Caleb Belcher and John Toler also recorded a quarterback sack.
Chapmanville is scheduled to return to action next week at home against rival Scott in a Cardinal Conference contest. The Skyhawks, 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, were idle on Friday night. Scott downed Tolsia in the opener.
