Tolsia ended Chapmanville’s dream of playing in the school’s first-ever state basketball tournament with Thursday night’s 38-35 victory over the Tigers at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena in the Class AA Region 4 Section 2 semifinals.

Chapmanville Regional High School, led by first-year coach Allan Hatcher, saw its season come to a close at 14-10.

The loss broke Chapmanville’s five-game winning streak and ended the prep careers of Tiger senior players Mackenzie Martin and Mikie Hurst. Martin became Chapmanville’s all-time leading scorer this season as he surpassed the 1,500-point mark.

Tolsia improved to 15-8 and was scheduled to play Scott (14-9) in Saturday night’s sectional finals at Logan. Scott advanced with a narrow 56-54 win over Mingo Central in Thursday night’s other sectional semifinal at Logan. Both the Rebels and Skyhawks have already advanced to this week’s Class AA regional tourney.

The Mingo Central Miners, led by first-year head coach and former Logan assistant Brad Napier, finished the season at 13-10.

Tolsia improved to 2-1 this season against Chapmanville. The two teams had split this year with each squad winning on the other’s home floor.

Chapmanville closed out its fourth straight winning season but failed once again to make it to the regionals and the state tourney.

The Tigers last played in the regional finals in 2010 when they lost to Sissonville. It was the third straight year Chapmanville had been ousted in the sectional semifinals.

Martin led the Tigers with 16 points. Kenny Plumley had nine, Brady Cox six off the bench and Hurst and Trey Dalton had two each.

Tolsia’s Terry Davis was held to just two points. The Rebels were paced by Morgan Stacy’s 15 points and Brandon Clark’s 12. Austin Brewer had seven and Jared Stroud two.

Chapmanville led 9-6 after one quarter and 15-14 at the half before Tolsia outscored the Tigers 11-8 in the third to take a 25-23 lead, using an 8-0 run to turn a 19-14 Chapmanville lead into a 22-19 Rebel advantage.

In the fourth, the Tigers tied it twice at 27 on a Cox inside bucket and at 29 on Martin’s shot in the lane.

Clark, however, scored on an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 32-29. It turned out to be the decisive score as Chapmanville never tied or led the rest of the way.

With 33 seconds left, Plumley got Chapmanville to within 35-33 with a steal and dunk.

Tolsia, though, was able to put the game away as Stacy hit two free throws with 26 seconds to go and Brewer split with 11.5 ticks left to make it 38-33 Rebels.

Martin’s layup with 2.5 seconds remaining got Chapmanville to within 38-35 but it was not enough.

Tolsia inbounded the ball and there was a tie-up with 0.5 of a second left. The ball went to the Rebels and one more inbound pass sealed the victory.
