CHAPMANVILLE — A truck backed into a bus loaded with kids yesterday afternoon at Wheatley Branch, but all on board escaped injury.
At least 18 students of the Chapmanville Regional High School-area were on the school bus when a pickup truck backed into the front end of the bus, according to Diana Adams, transportation supervisor for the Logan County Board of Education.
Adams said the incident was no more than a fender bender, but it did require emergency crews to check out all the students on the bus. Adams said there were no injuries and the bus driver completed his run in the same bus.
The West Virginia State Police investigated the crash. No one was available at the WVSP in Logan to comment on the crash. Adams said no citations were issued.
“It happened in the afternoon on the driver’s evening run and there were about 18 students on there and there were no injuries,” Adams said. “The EMTs came and checked them all out and the students were all okay.
“The bus was coming down Wheatley Branch and a truck was backing up Wheatley Branch and backed into the school bus,” Adams said. “It wasn’t a major accident. It was a fender bender. We always call 911 when there are students on the bus. All of the students were checked out and released. It was high school and middle school students together. The incident was minor and he actually completed his bus run in that bus. The damage was very minor.”
Adams said the bus driver was blowing his horn to let the truck’s driver know he was about to collide with the bus’s front end.
“The bus was actually stopped,” Adams said. “Wheatley Branch is a very narrow road on a hill and it’s curvy. The bus was coming down the hill and a truck had pulled out of its driveway and was coming down the hill and there was another large truck coming up, so the other truck tried to back up (back) into his driveway and he backed into the bus. The bus driver was blowing his horn to get the truck driver’s attention, but, apparently, it didn’t work.”
The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m., Adams said.
